On my Fujitsu Lifebook N 5010, my worn out Toshiba SDR6112F disc drive stopped reading DVD-ROMs. I need to read my Windows XP image disc to reinstall the OS (I just had the partitions wiped for a new HDD), but the drive wouldn't read the installation DVD-ROM anymore, only CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs. I replaced it with a Philips SDP8005BM/17 disc drive, but my Phoenix BIOS does not Auto Detect the drive at all. The power comes on and the disc spins up, but the BIOS will not recognize it. Can anyone help me as I'm ready to call it quits and just buy something else....Do I need a BIOS upgrade, do I have the wrong drive type or what? I thought that all IDE connections were the same, as long as the drive fits the slot (I've never had a problem before)....

How about borrowing an external USB drive? I know on my old ThinkPads, circa the same time as the N5010, I could install Windows from an external drive.

You would have to show me how. I heard of this before but my BIOS doesn't show any options about booting from external hardware. I have the Phoenix BIOS 1.26 Version.
