I’ve had my N6010 for a little over a month now and its great but I have an issue. I work for a small game studio designing 2D levels for a side scrolling game. To do these level layouts I use a proprietary software that copies image selections that I have made from a specific tileset to an area I select on a tilemap. Basically, I drag 2D objects form a small bitmap picture and drag them onto the level layout. It’s a pretty simple concept but it taxes processors, because while I move the selection around on the level map, it refreshes the entire map constantly in order to show where I have dragged my selection to. My problem is that this refresh rate is very slow and makes the software difficult to use. The worst part about this is that computers using hardware that is 5 years old still get a much better refresh rate than I do with my $2500 laptop! I found that turning off hyperthreading helps a little, but beyond that I cant figure it out. Any ideas?

Only guessing, but you might try turning HT back on and turning hardware video acceleration down. I had problems with a CAD program not rendering properly and that was the solution from the CAD company. It worked. They said it had something to do with OS and CAD program fighting over resources.

Thanx for the effort man, I just tried that & it had no effect. Any other ideas?

BTW, games like Doom 3 & HL 2 run great… so why wont this simple program work, I don’t get it.

How much RAM do you have? and are you running low on memory when using this program? Are you experiencing increased HDD activity (swaping)?

You can also try to lock your CPU at constant 3.2GHz by going to control panel > power options > always on.

I have a gig of memory and that seems to be fine. HDD seems fine too. This is what its performance looks like when i'm using the program. The processor pegs when I am moving an object around and the map is refreshing. There is no reason the cpu shouldnt handle this though. I've seen several PC's with cpu's under a gig and intigrated video cards run this program many times better than my N6.

????????? Throw ideas at me guys - I'll try anything.

He said he's done the same stuff on lower spec machines, so I doubt the 67 processes running are the problem. My bet is video drivers. Have you tried different video drivers? Might be the OS. Did the other machines have the same OS as on your laptop?

Yep, Win XP. Would it be safe to instal other video drivers though - because its the mobile version of the ati 9700? I've heard people have had some real stability problems when they have done that.

So I installed the omega drivers and it did help somewhat. Everything seems stable too. It still isn’t performing the way it should though. Any suggestions on how to optimize the drivers for better performance, or maybe other ideas on how to improve my programs refresh rate? It’s getting there though, thanx for the help so far.
