I've had the N6410 for almost a year now and I enjoy it though it's heavy and the battery lasts far too short.

However I usually have it plugged into A/C and I use it to process photo shoots (kevinbreak.com lastyle.net) and it would be wonderful to get those photos processed faster.

The HDDs running at 4200rpm is sad speed wise, although I use the second drive as a backup.
Now, I did get ahold of a core to duo 3400 chip... and I was wondering... if I have the dual core 1.66, how far away is that from the 3400? Is it a drop fit?

Is there a BIOS flash I can find?
Whether it will work or not, what would the speed difference be like?

I have to rotate hundreds of photos from horizontal to vertical, and the two GBs of ram are ok, but.... the customers always are grumpy at the end of shoots when they wait for the DVDs.

If it would be a noticeable speed increase, and the chip wouldn't fit, would selling my marvelous monster be worth it, to get a newer model?

    thanks.

I think you have the 1.66 ghz core duo as its the lowest cpu model. You may upgrade to core 2 duo if you want. While you may be able to upgrade them. The only difference of the newer model N6420 is it has a core 2 duo.

But for now I'd say upgrade the hard drive to a faster speed, 5400 rpm for 7200 rpm. Not sure what you mean about the dvds. If you are actually loading pictures from the dvd, it may be better to store pictures and files in the hard drive when loading.

cpu powers isn't needed that much for loading pictures, while the computer does need to load pictures from the hard drive.
