My daughter will be studying in Edinburgh in the fall and will be taking her 7020D. Does she need a voltage transformer or only an adapter plug? I am guessing that she needs either a transformer or converter to recharge her cell phone and Creative Zen music player - does anyone here know?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi there,

Depending on the voltage rating for her cellphone, laptop and music player, she will need a adapter and a converter if required. Most new electronic products are designed to operate from a wide range of voltage (100 to 240 V), so you should check each device for its voltage rating. If a device can take any voltage from 100 to 240V, then an adapter such as this one, will be sufficient. Otherwise, for a specific voltage (I am guessing 110V for the U.S.), she'll need a converter. This kit may be useful.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks! Where do I find the voltage ratings for the items, or at least for the laptop?

You need to check the small print on each power adaptor.

If it is one of the lightweight electronic power supplies then the input rating is normally around 100~240V, 50~60Hz. If it is, then there will be no problem with the UK power (nominally 230V, 50Hz) and all that is needed is a plug adaptor. The UK electricity plug has 3 rectangular pins.

All computer PSUs that I have encounters in the past 15 years have been able to handle to full international range of voltage.

The voltage rating should be on the large stick on ur notebook charger! My charger is (100V-240V) so i could use it any where, just need a socket adapter!

Cell phone charger should be 100V- 240V as well!

I just checked to power adapter and it is just as you said. Thanks! So, I guess all I need is the correct plug adapter. I have seen some with two rectangular pins and some with three. Will both work or do I need the 3 pin variety?

Thanks again! Just one more thing, does she need a surge protector? If yes, any particular type?

The UK plug / socket is the type G shown here.

For the laptop it will be convenient to look for a new mains power lead with a UK plug on the end. It's probably this.
