After close to four years of faithful service, my N5000's hard drive crashed on Sunday. I was able to back up everything to an external drive last Friday so hopefully I can get everything back. I just got a new drive for my computer today and I have no idea how to put the operating system on it. When I start up the computer it just goes to a black screen with a flashing courser. What should I do?

Hate to say it, but the old OS was probably OEM and cannot be transfered to the new laptop.

Anyway, the new laptop should have had recovery DVDs or an option to make them the first time you boot with the original drive you purchased. That is what you need.

You will either need a Windows OEM installation disc or the restore CDs that came with your computer.

I assume you have a Windows License (multi-colored sticker with a serial on it) somewhere on your laptop, correct?

Er, his OEM license can be transferred to the new drive Greg, it's still the same system just a new HDD...

Yeah, it's just a new hard drive. I have two discs: one that says "Restore Disc" and another that is for drivers and application restore. I'm going to use the first one, right?

You will first need to use the first disc to restore the system. The second disk will likely need to be used in order to properly get all of your hardware working again. If you have any issues getting it to boot from CD, try F12, F11, F10, or F8 to choose your first boot device then select your optical drive.
