Hey all,
I just bought a 6210 a few days ago, in part by having read this forum. Thanks for all of the great content.
I was going to go with the IBM X40, but decided to carry a little extra weight and get the bigger screen and built-in optical drive with the 6210.
I am very pleased with it!
I bought it from Fry's, even though I'm far from a fan after a bad experience with them in LA almost 10 years ago. But I needed it to take on a trip next week, and the better online places seemed to be out of stock. I bought the entry-level ($1499) model.
Anyway, I did not find any dead pixels, and so far it's running great.
I love the screen - that was a pleasant surprise. Looking at it, I think I would have trouble with anything smaller. The picture is awesome. I was worried about glare, but have had no problems at all yet.
The build quality seems good. I like the keyboard, which was an important factor, except for the delete key size/placement and a bit of squishiness that I got accustomed to pretty quickly.
I can't believe how light it is though. I am currently a desktop user, so this is a supplement mostly for writing, but I did own a Dell Insprion 8000 some years ago, and the difference is night and day. In a small carry bag, you don't even feel it. My Dell used to rip my shoulder off, though that was intended to be a desktop replacement.
I think it has an excellent balance of features and portability. For me, it is so light that anything lighter/smaller I wouldn't really notice any additional benefit. It is nice to have a built-in optical drive, which I was originally planning to do without.
Questions:
1) Is it worth extending the warranty to three years direct with Fujitsu (quoted $179)? At first I thought it was a no-brainer, but seeing as how it might not cover damage to the screen, I don't know that it is worth it. I also don't know that I would keep it for three years (hard to say now - that's a long time).
2) Can the keyboard keys be remapped? For instance, I use "delete" a lot, and wanted to map it to one of the bigger keys I don't use at all.
Thanks!
Jason

I think you can buy a "screen protection" policy from fujitsu. It is a few hundred buts covers 2 broken screens I think.
this is a good keyboard remapping utility that adds to the registery to make the changes.

Thanks for the info. I did see that additional warranty, but that with the 3 yr extension gets you up to 1/3 the cost of the total laptop. I'm kind of leaning toward just being really careful...
Also, if I bought the endtry-level $1499 model with 512 MB of ram, is that in just one of two slots? Could I buy more ram from say Crucial, and use the ram it came with at the same time?
Thanks again!

The RAM is in two slots unless specified otherwise.

It comes with 2x256 and if you buy a 512mb stick online, then you could have a total of 768. A 512 stick cost over a 100 so I went with the 768 upgrade on the portable one site for 75. This way I have 768 now, and if I want to upgrade to one gig I can do so for 100 by buyin a 512stick and replacing a 256 stick. Does this make sense?

if it comes with the 2x256 and you added a 512 wouldn't that be a gig? or were you talking about removing one of the 256's?

Right, it comes with 2 x 256. You have to take one out to put in 512, totaling 768.
I feel like I'm in math class...now if a train leaves Boston at 60 MPH...
