No 64 Bit Vista Support for any Fujitsu

I purchased a N6420 (with a T7200 Core 2 Duo processor). Fujitsu says that they have no 64 bit Vista drivers and do not plan to provide 64 bit Vista drivers for this machine or any others. It will be 32 bit only.

 

Well, there's always Google to search the 64 bit drivers from the net. I bet you can find 80+% of your drivers there.

 

I am angry they do not tell you this when you buy (I bought direct from them), no place on the site do they tell you. They sell you a 64 bit processor and give you a free upgrade to Vista, but have no intention of providing 64 bit Vista drivers, ever, only 32 bit. There should be a notice that Vista is only 32 bit even though the hardware will support 64 bit.

 

Sorry, that sounds like great idea, but I do know understand who to check if Fujitsu does not supply the drivers. Can you give any guidence?

So uhm, yeah. I put 64-Ultimate on my n6420 and the only driver I haven't had any luck in finding in a 64-bt format is the Biometric driver. Everything else was findable. If anyone finds one let me know please.

 

Do you mean the fingerprint sensor?

There are 64-bit Vista drivers for some of the newer models (like the E8410 and S6410) on the Singapore site.

Most of you complaining about a lack of 64 bit wouldn't notice the difference anyway. Now, I run linux, not windows, but I do have 64 bit and 32 bit systems that I can compare. The ONLY thing that is any noticeably faster between 64 and 32 bit systems is the time it takes for my finite element models to solve. 64 bit cuts 25-50% off the time to solution. In terms of more mundane apps (firefox, office apps, email, video) I haven't noticed any difference between 64 and 32 bit.

By all means, be grumpy about a lack of support and information at time of sale. I'm with you on those two counts. Just don't feel too ripped off in terms of practical performance.

 

I dont see what 64 bit Vista does for that particular laptop.

 

very unusal as i have vista 64 and the install picked up most of the hardware in my notebook and before installing i had already looked at fujis website and downloaded all the drivers that were there for v64, and they had most of them tho some were not tested but worked and i havent had any problems except for the sis163u wlan minicard (major cheap i think ) but i had problems in vista32 as well mainly with BSOD when bandwidth was too much for it when transfering and downloading.
i know fuji will say they dont support the laptop under vista 64 but they all say that to save them more problems on tech lines due to lack of drivers for older hardware not being available and noobies phoning in cuz they cant get the hardware to work only to find out its not supported or drivers are not being made under that operating system and they never bothered to check compatability due to them thinking it was the same as vista32 and trying to use same drivers .

one tip i will say is if you look at the next or next few models up of your laptop in the vista64 section of drivers you might find that it has the same equipment and thus the drivers will work..worth a try as i noticed they stopped updating the drivers for mine in jan-april tho if you look at the xa2858
model it has vista 64 same hardware updated recently and in text files with it it stated its supprted by my notebook as well so its plain lazyness on fujis side.

last thing is i couldnt find you notebook on fujis website using the n6420 model number? so i couldnt check out the specs of the notebook.

 

Really, the only reason for the average user to even consider installing Vista 64 is if they want 4GB of ram.

 

Or if you want to run an application that needs more than 2GB RAM.

 

the N6420 was recently replaced by the N6460, which added Blue-ray DVD support and dropped support for the HD-DVD. Here are the specs of the fujitsu web site for the N6420:
