After weeks of debating whether or not i should order the N6010, i decided to go through with it today!! [ :)]

I never questioned fujitsu's build quality or reliability; it was just a matter of whether i could justify shelling out the $ since i already had the N5010. Over in Singapore, my mom has the S6210, and my dad has the S7010 (older, non-CV version), and neither of us has had any problems whatsoever with any of the units.

After thinking about it more and more, i just couldn't turn down the thought of a 17" CV screen!!!! (I wish it had been WSXGA, but i guess WXGA+ will have to do).

Of course, i ordered through Ivan over at Portable One/Laptops Inc. My first experience ordering my N5010 through them was absolutely wonderful, and , in my opinion, they really run an A+ classy shop over there.

Anyways, here are the "upgrades"/specs i chose:

XP Pro (TV Tuner)
TV Tuner
1 x 512mb Ram (Will be upgrading to 2 x 1GB in january)
60GB 7200rpm HD
Multi-Format DVD +/- writer

Of course, i'll be counting down the days until i get to see the 17" screen on this puppy.

I'll also be posting detailed pics if anyone's interested.

oh yeah, people will be interested in pictures, so post away. NotebookReview would be happy to host them if you need help with that.

Congrats on the purchase, I hope the N6000 lives up to the standards all of the other Fujitsu's have.

Congrats Michae42 on successfully making the order. I am still in the debate zone whether to order it today or wait till next week. I live in Canada and the reseller said they will receive shipments in 2 weeks. Right after christmas. [V] I wish I could customize the specs, but the ones available in Canada are all preconfigured.

I think I will order it next week, just for my Credit Card to be billed first, so this order will go into next months statement.

How much would it cost to upgrade to 2GB on your own? Does a regular computer user need 2GB worth of memory? I think the highest tech software I would like to run are Adobe Photoshop CS and Sims 2.

Hi Betty,

2 GB's of memory should run anywhere around $600-$700 (someone please correct me if i'm wrong...)

For the average user, i think 2 gigs of memory would be a bit of overkill.

I recommend 1GB, but 512 will work. Anything less is a problem.

1 GB might not be a bad idea if you plan to do photoshop. I am playing with a new finite element program called femlab that routinely uses a gigabyte or more of Virtual Memory. My modeling program prior to that had never asked for so much memory, so I only ordered my N5010 with 512MB (2x256) :(

1 GB will be the recommended standard soon. As programs require more RAM to store its temporary data.

Hey everyone....unfortunately, fedex managed to SCREW UP the delivery. They claimed the address was wrong (even though i called over the wknd to confirm the correct office address). They then said it would be delivered in the afternoon. I went back to the office after bowling tonight, but the package wasn't there. called again, and fedex said the driver RAN OUT OF TIME, hence no delivery [ :(!]. i then proceeded to tell them that if i wanted 3-5 day delivery, i would have opted for UPS ground. u better BELIEVE i complained to no end for a refund (even though it was shipped free from portableone. hahahaha!)

so, unfortunately, i'll be posting the pics and initial review at some point tmrw. stay tuned!

Did I mention I don't like FedEx either? I called them to ask if they could move my package from one FedEx office to another office because it was much much MUCH closer to me. They insisted the office it is currently in is the closest to my house and they would charge me extra money just to move it to another FedEx location for pickup. Ugh! Even UPS is willing to change shipping address with no extra charge.

Looks like we'll both be getting our laptop tomorrow on Wednesday :) I doubt I will be able to take pictures and have them up online tomorrow though...probably Friday or Saturday.

IT'S HERE!!!! fedex FINALLY showed up at the office around 4:30. I've barely had time to really fool around with the unit. Taking care of all the basics first, like installing programs and transferring all of my files to my new baby.

Initial impressions:
Like I said, i haven't really had the opportunity to really "test things out." Guess i'll get the chance when i get to the office in the morning and do some GIS and statistical work [ :p].

Looks: This is truly one sexy machine. At first, i was skeptical about the off-white and silver color scheme. I really loved the silver/gray and black layout on the N5010. But after seeing the N6010 in person, i must say that the color scheme is awesome! As you can see in the picture, the power button on the top right glows blue while the unit is on, which i think looks really cool. In addition, on the front panel (inbetween the speakers) are situation various indicators, including battery, AC power, charging, etc. These glow blue or green. I personally like these colors, but i could see how some people might find them somewhat cheezy.

Build Quality: As soon as i took the unit out of the box, i could feel just how solidly it was built. Sure, it feels heavy, but heavy doesn't necessarily equate to quality or sturdiness. The entire top casing around the keyboard, as well as the outer cover appear to be some sort of alloy (magnesium?), and all of the multimedia buttons feel solid as well. I've seen and picked up other 17" laptops in bestbuy and circuit city (hp, toshiba, sony), and to me fujitsu seems to be tops in terms of overall build quality (though, i haven't seen the toshiba qosmio or the new hp zd8000).

Touchpad: Compared to the N5010, the touchpad on the N6010 seems more responive to me. In addition, the left and right-click and scroll buttons feel sturdier.

Screen: Like I mentioned in one of my previous post, i was skeptical about the WXGA+ resolution, especially considering i was using SXGA+ (1400x1050) on the N5010. But after working in excel for a bit tonight, it seems that the WXGA+ will be just fine. And, of course, how could i not mention the Crystal View Screen? It's amazing. While i've seen other companies' glossy screens, including xbright, trubrighht, brightview, and rainbow bright, to my eyes the fujitsu's CV outshines the rest and stands out from the rest of the pack. Maybe it's because the screen isn't too glossy to the point of excess where it can start giving people headaches. But, of course, to each his/her own. [ :)]

Keyboard: As i sit here typing all of this out, I can't stop thinking about how great this keyboard feels. I feel no keyboard flex, and it just feels "nice" typing on this puppy. And, i STILL can't believe that i have a laptop with a built-in numeric keypad! Finally, i've used the Fujitsu's N5010 and S6210 in the past, and i can't even BEGIN to tell you how satisfying it is that fujitsu FINALLY provided independent "home" and "end" keys. i just HATED having to use "home" and "end" via function keys!!!!

For anyone out there who has been looking at or even considering buying a N6010, hopefully all of this has proved useful [ :)]

And now, of course, here are the pics as promised. I took these pics at home after i got home tonight. I wish i had had some natural daytime lighting when taking these pics, but hopefully these will suffice. If anyone wants full-size 5.0mp pics, just lemme know!

The computer appearing next to the N6010 is my old Dell 600m. While the pic does not do full justice to the crystal view screen on the N6010, hopefully you can make out just how vibrant and bright the N6010 appears when compared to the 600m.

hopefully the rest of the pictures give a higher level of detail compared to some of the other pics that have been available online thus far.

hey brian,

couldn't agree with you more! [ :D]

hopefully, i'll be following your lead and be getting a P7010 at some point in '05. Afterall, as wonderful as it may be, i don't think i can justify the N6010 as being anywhere close to ultraportable, let alone thin-and-light. [8D]

Here are two larger, higher-res photos of the screen (taken without flash). Again, these pics definitely don't do the crystal view enough justice, but they should give everyone an idea of how bright and clear the screen is [ :)]

Cool pictures! I got my computer yesterday too! I spent much of the night just installing needed programs. I still haven't gotten to really play with any programs yet. For initial impression, I was surprised that it was actually a bit wider than I thought it to be, probably because my desk is small, so it looks like it took a lot of room.

I will try to post my review and pictures soon.

i just got my n6010 and am very impressed with everything, includung the screen. however when using the tv tuner from vcable the picture is really horrible. even dvd resolution seems very disappointing. why is such a sharp screen doing so poorly on dvd and tv playback. any ideas. am thinking of treturning and getting the hp zd7000 which has higher resolution screen.
quote:
