I think I've narrowed down my laptop choices to the S6240/2110 (whichever is available/cheaper locally) or the P7010.
Overall I love the P7010 for size, widescreen, weight, etc. My only worry is performance. My main use for this laptop will be storing and editing digital photos. Does anyone use this laptop for photoshop duties? If so, how does it perform?
Second from photo duties, I'll be mostly handling emails, and dvd player. Anything else I should consider before I make the plunge?
Thanks,
JB

I don't use it for Photoshop, but the PM 1.2 is really not designed for that and PS is CPU intensive. So it will work, but man, you'd probably spend a ton of time waiting. I'd be looking at the S2110 instead.

I do quite a bit of photoshop work, since I'm mainly a freelance graphic designer. My P7010 is equipped with 4200 rpm HDD and 768 MB RAM. Photoshop performs just fine, no noticeable lag. One suggestion, get yourself an ample amount of RAM (more than 512 MB).
Are you sure that the screen size is not an issue? At times I think the 10.6" is a little bit of an issue for graphics work. I better get myself an external monitor -
Yeah, I plan on putting at least a gig of ram in either machine. Glad to hear the 7010 can handle it. Most of my photoshop work on the road will be curve and level adjustment, so I'd assume it wouldn't be too taxing..
As far as the screen goes, I really don't know. I'm hoping it's big enough, but I guess I won't know until I've already made the leap and bought the thing. How do other 7010 users feel about screen size? Most of the time it will be used for writing, surfing the web, movies, etc. -
Writing documents, surfing the web, and watching movies are fine on the P7010. Although everything seems to be small, you'll get used to it after about a couple of weeks of owning the machine. You should only get the P7010 if portability and battery life is your priority over screen estate. Make no mistake, although the screen dimensions are small, the resolution and colour rendition is pretty amazing.
If you travel alot (as I do since I am a student), then this notebook may be for you. It has a lot of selling points including the multiformat card reader, swappable drive bay, weight, price, and amazing battery life. However, all of this comes at a cost -- screen size and performance compared to larger notebooks. Not too much to sacrifice in my opinion. -
Portability is one of my main criteria, as I'll be travelling for a year or so, and everything I own will be on my back. I'll have a couple of cameras, along with my clothes, sleeping bag, etc. so the smaller the better. I've looked at the size/weight of the S6240, and it is definately packable, but the 7010 is that much better, and the gadget freak in me loves the design. As long as it will handle an average load in photoshop I should be fine..
Thanks for the help so far, this site is a great resource. -
I'd definitely stick with the 7010 then over the newer 7120. The latter has a 1.8" drive. I'll be selling my 7010 on eBay in 2 weeks, has a 7200 RPM drive and 1GB RAM if you can wait.
-
Why are you selling it? What will you replace it with? Maybe you should get the newer 7120 and wait for 1.8" 5400 rpm drives to be released??
-
I've had the 7120 for a month, review will be up on Mon/Tues.

Wonder how long it'll take to get faster, bigger 1.8" drives? The largest and fastest I've seen are 60 gig 4200 rpm drives.
