So going to get a ssd for my Fujitsu P7120

Looking at a KingSpec 64GB SSD
    SSD,Solid State Disk,KingSpec SSD,Solid Hard Drives

    Reads: 66MB/S
    Write: 50MB/S

Now the spec of the HDD is MK6008GAH: 1.8 " CE HDD 60.0GB
1.8-Inch Hard Disk Drive Model MK6008GAH - Toshiba

    Data Transfer Rate:
Buffer to Host- PIO 16.6 Mb/sec
Buffer to Host- Ultra DMA 100 Mb/sec
    Maximum Internal 131.1 - 283.3 Mbits/sec

Now 100mb/s is 12.5MB/s is that really how slow the stock HDD is? or am i getting these numbers mixed up?

getting numbers mixed up. The UDMA-5 interface can transfer up to 100MB/s (read) or 88.9MB/s (write).

There are faster/better ZIF SSDs than the Kingspec one you've listed. See EWS720, Mtroni Mobi and Indilinx units at http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...-1-8-zif-pata-ssds-available.html#post6861746 . Same link can be used to compare performance b/w a ZIF HDD and ZIF SSD.

thanks for the heads up nando4, i didn't even think of using ZIF ssd's with a converter. Was looking at the kingspec since they were relatively cheap and a simple drop in.

hi, i also want to upgrade the hd in my P7120 with ssd. i am relatively new to ssds but am well experienced working with hard drives etc.
can you please help me in choosing ssd? i don't know what connector is needed for the 7120. im confused whether it should be pata, sata or even zif?
i am going to hongkong for the ssd next week since most stores here in the philippines dont carry ssds.
    thanks in advance.

yep the thread rachel posted has all the info you need (or links to them)

I'll be getting a PATA ZIF ssd and then get a ZIF to CF adaptor. This allows you to use better SSD's than the CF SSD's that are a drop in for the P7120.

    Hi rachel,
i opted for the kingspec 50 pin as the store didnt have zif adapters.
so i replaced the hdd with the ssd but my bios wont recognize the ssd.
how do i get my 7120 to see the ssd? i thought it'd be a simple replacement.
    please help.

would this be the kingspec i listed in the OP?

Having a look at the cable on my 7120 it can only get connected one way, but could you have dislodged the cable to the motherboard? Have you tried reseating (remove then put back) that?

    thebranded,

it's the exact one although i bought the 32gb version. i wanted just to run windows and office in it.
yes it can only go in one way. and am pretty sure its seated right because when i replace the old hdd it works well. which is what im using now.

i even upgraded my bios version from 1.19 to 1.23. i cant understand why it wont work. the ssd was sealed when i bought it and they wouldnt let me try it out before purchase. i'm back in my country and will be unable to return it.

could it be defective (even if sealed) or should i do something to format it? (how if the bios wont detect it?)

In the Bios there is usually a setting for IDE or AHCI? try both, cant recall which is meant o work better on ssd. i could not find it in mine though and im running 1.23 as well.

Bios again under advanced, internal device config, everything should be enabled.

you can get ebay hdd cases that will allow you to use the ssd as a USB drive, thats probably the best way to test, costs few dollars.

im sure someone elses on here can suggest other options to try. I've not got a ssd for mine yet.

no there isnt a choice for AHCI in bios. just enable or disable IDE. disabling IDE doesn't work.
    what a waste.
i really hope someone in this forum can help.

If you buy the external usb do you have another laptop that you can connect it to try and format it?
In the other thread i wrote that it's a bit of an unknown quantity.
In one of the Amazon reviews someone appeared to get this working with a
P7120. May be it could be a bad drive. With the Photofast drive i bought for a P7230 it was recognised in the BIOS, only that it was not recognised via usb. I had to try and do this with another laptop.

    Hi,

Has anyone been able to achieve read speeds significantly greater than about 30MB\s. For example in Photofast G-Monster V4 ZIF SSD User Reviewl Martin_555 claims that they cannot achieve speeds greater than about 30MB\s, even though the SSD is capable of speeds much greater than this and even though the P7120 uses UDMA/100.

    Thanks

it seems i bought a bad drive. got a cf reader and it reports an i/o error.
will try to contact kingspec for a return. i bought it in hongkong and have no way to return it to the store.

I bought a USB drive holder for the Kingspec disk and plugged it in to my other computer running windows 7. I could then format the disk (which left one or two files on it) and insert it back into the Fujitsu P7120. This time it was properly recognized (although coming up with an error message saying "remove all disks" because there was no operating system). From there it was easy to boot up the system from a Linux Mint DVD with the version 16 Linux Mint MATE system on it and Linux was installed with no difficulty.
