I have a 5 year old Fujitsu Lifebook. Today, my keyboard started malfunctioning. Some examples:
    Left arrow key doesnt work
pressing E, prints a Y character on the screen
    The 1 key doesnt work
Pressing enter results in a backspace
    Pressing M prints a V
    Pressing X prints an F

I tried cleaning the keyboard with a toothbrush. rubbing alcohol and canned air. I rebooted several times and confirmed that these keyboard problems exist before windows starts (tested the keyboard in the bios setup)
I am now using an external keyboard until I can get this fixed

Does this usually mean a motherboard problem or just the need to replace the keyboard assembly.
    Looking for some advice
    Thanks

If the external keyboard is working properly, then it would be a logical assumption that the laptop keyboard is going bad.

It's most likely a keyboard problem. There's a small chance that the problem can be cleared by disconnecting / reconnecting the keyboard ribbon cable, but most you likely you need a new keyboard. The S6120 at home is on its 3rd keyboard in 5 years (but I think one replacement was triggered by a liquid spill).

However, unless you can find a keyboard at a good price then it may be time to consider a replacement computer.

I worked on an IBM laptop for about a week and it turned out that a coffee spill to the keyboard caused a similar problem. After washing it with water, the keyboard works for a while. Something happens after about an hour or so to make it error with a stuck key message upon boot up. I ordered a replacement keyboard and everything was fine after that!
