Which one should I invest on, in order to have a better, faster preforming computer that will last me longer? I'm thinking that if I go with a faster processor (Pentium M 1.7 Ghz) then I would cut back to only about 512 MB of RAM OR a slower processor (PM 1.6 Ghz) with more RAM, say about 1 GB or so. Is the .1 Ghz increase in processor speed worth the extra $100?

So I guess what I'm asking is that if I have one thing how should I accommodate the other to balance out the performance?

Note: I will be getting a Fujitsu S6231 and those are the only specs available.

well, you can always buy the ram later. It's much harder to upgrade a processor.

The hard drive speed is also a large part of the performacne equation.

I don't think you'll really notice all that much difference between the 1.6 and 1.7 processors. I think you will see a big difference in some applications with the extra RAM. If I were you, I'd get the 1.6 and use part of the $100 to pay the $40 to get the 512MB all in one slot. Then you could use the extra $60 someday to buy another 512MB if you wanted, or find a one-day sale (good for 6/21/2005) like this:

    and put in another 1GB for $105 . . .

That's what I did and I've got the 1.6 processor and 1.5GB in my S6231 now. I run photoshop alot and am happy with performance. 1.5GB RAM might be overkill for regular office applications, though.
