Hey fellas. Great board you have here. Wanted to share this quick story about my recent buy.

I've been looking at Fujitsu's outlet for a month now and check in every day to see what new machines they drop in the bucket. For those of you that check the outlet, you know about how annoying and hard to read the specs of some of the machines are right? Well I think I got lucky because of some confusion they caused.

Today I found a S7010 that caught my eye. It was listed at $1716 - $500 instant for $1216. Take away another $100 for the outlet coupon and the total came to $1116 in my cart. The specs were listed as "1.7G, 14XGA, 512MB, CDRW/DVD, 30GB". Fujitsu always lists the screen as “CV XGA”, “SXGA+”, or regular “XGA”. I didn't think the S7010 was ever made with a regular XGA screen (non-crystal view), so I called up and asked the rep. He checked and told me that the screen on the S7010 listed was NOT crystal view, it was an ordinary 14" screen, and that several people had called asking the same question. I still didn't believe him, so I asked to speak to his boss. Sure enough, after twenty minutes the supervisor tells me that it is INDEED a crystal view screen and that it had been input wrong. He said they dropped the price $500 because the machine hasn't moved in two weeks (wonder why!). I snatched it up at $1116. Went on ebay and picked up a stick of corsair 512mb for 60$, and a 40GB travelstar 7200rpm for $85.

So, the final, accurate, real specs of the machine are:

    Pentium M 735 1.7Ghz, 40gb 7200RPM, 1gb RAM, 14" CV XGA, wireless lan, XPP.
Total cost: $1355 after tax and shipping.

I can't wait to get my dirty little fingers on this one! Thanks to everyone on these boards for posting great information.

Comments/Suggestions... am I missing something big here?

Not to worry you but fujitsu never fitted CV screens on laptops with 1.7GHz CPUs. This was the old line with Banias cores and pre CV screen days. Now this might be an older model that for some reason got a CV.
Let us know once you get it.

See, this is exactly what I was afraid of. Anyone confirm this?

I'll send the machine back if it turns out to be true.
Should all CV screens say "Crystal View" somewhere on the panel? Any way I can check once it arrives?

    qwester,

Called back. You were right. Fujitsu verified the machine does NOT HAVE a crystal view display. Damn, thank you so much. They said if it shipped they would have had a hard time taking it back. I appreciate the help. Saved me a huge headache.

But now I'm back to looking for a nice Fujitsu with a CV. I think I will configure a new S7010 and drop the HD down, and lose the CD burner. That should bring the price around 1300. Then I can add in my aftermarket stuff I already bought to bring it up to speed.

Anything I should know about new models or soon-to-be price drops? Thanks again qwester, really appreciate it.

The S should be refreshed soon...an announcement was initially expected this month.

If you wait for the new S series (Sonoma), then the memory module that you got may be useless, because it will most probably be using the new DDR2.
As for prices the current platform and the sonoma are equally priced. But if fujitsu decides to sell the current models thru the outlet, then you're up for a good deal + you can use the memory module that you bought.

The S in S series doesn't mean Sonoma.... It's just the S series.

Just like I have an N series and I had a C series..

I am surely not as knowledgeable as most of the folks here, but the S7010 with the 1.7 GHz does, indeed, come with the CV screen, although this may not have always been the case. I hope nobody here is upset by me mentioning this here, but Fujitsu has been selling several on eBay recently that clearly state they are Pentium 735s with the CV screen.
