I just about decided to buy a Fujitsu S6231, there a just a few last things I'd like to know.

-1) Has anyone's S62** *not* worked out of the box?

    0) How often do your S62** need repair? I live in Brazil, so shipping it abroad if something goes wrong is quite a chore.

    1) What is the difference in performace between a 4200 rpm HD and a 5400 rpm HD? Will the upgrade affect the battery life?

    2) Can I install a standalone graphics card later on?

    3) What will give the longest DVD playing time: Play from disk, play from DivX, or play from a mirror in the HD?

Thanks a lot for any help. I plan to grow out of my newbyness eventualy.

From what I've read, the quality is excellent, so most likely you won't need to send it in for repairs. If you do, support is also supposed to be top notch. The HD speed is a bottleneck on most computers, so getting a faster one will improve load times significantly. I think that the Hitachi 7k60 actually uses less battery power. I don't think you can upgrade the Video card. I don't know about the mirror option, but DivX requires less power than playing from an optical drive.

    hope this helps!

    1) I've never heard of one being DOA, that just doesn't happen with Fujitsu. I've also known very few who have ever had to send in for repair.

    2) No

    3) Something on the HDD would be best, as Chaos noted.

Fujitsu makes great product, I have no quality concerns at all.

Thanks for the advice! I will buy a 6231 with a 40GB 4200 rpm hd, and (much) later upgrade to a 80gb 7200.

PS: I sent my last post to a friend in Britain who knows about computers. He told me holding a mirror to my notebook would not change battery life, but migth enhance my viewing angle. The Humor! The Humor!
