How good is the build quality of 6220? Does it compare to IBMs? Am considering buying T42 14.1" or Fujitsu 6220 but i need one that's tough and light when you travel with it. I travel a lot in my work meeting customers and doing presentations.

Fujitsu is equal to IBM in terms of quality and support.

I am having the same dilemma. I can't decide between the T42 and the S6220. Have you made up your mind? Any other people have opinions on which is the better bet?

It really depends on your needs, there's a poll in the hardware forum to this effect.

I'm still deciding but it might be an S6220. Two of my friends have S2000 and P5000 and they seem to be reliable. When i hold them the feel is not as solid as IBMs though it wouldn't be right to make a direct comparison. My Gateway Solo 5300 i bought in 2000 with a lot of flexing on the screen and keyboard is still running wihtout any problems except changing the battery after 2 years. I tried typing on T41 the feel is much better than S6220 but it's not much of an issue to me. I noticed when they keep the fujitsus they sandwich a piece of cloth between the screen and keyboard and carry them carefully. My boss puts his X31 in his roller bag without any straps and travel through airports and mines sites and haven't had any single problem yet in 1.5 years. You would want to take care if you pay more than a grand for something.

I don't know for sure about the Fujitsu S series since I have not seen one. But I can comment on the Thinkpad T series as I very briefly had two of them. The build quailty is not that great at all. I was thoroughly unimpressed. I think they were well made at one time, but have declined in quality quite a bit in the last 2-3 years. The keyboard was the only aspect of them that felt to be made well. I would say to go for the Fujitsu. Their web site for ordering and for downloads, drivers and support seems much cleaner, less busy and less confusing than IBM. I just ordered an E series and their customer service was clearly superior to IBM, at least as far as pre-sales goes. We will see how the rest of the experience goes.

In terms of build quality, I cannot be happier with the s6210. Last weekend, I was moving into a new apartment and dropped my s6210 from about four feet. I was carrying it and the power cord got caught on a chair and it fell out of my hands. Granted, it fell on soft carpet, but still. It could have been a lot worse. Right now I am typing on it as if nothing happened.

I now know that the s6210 is the right laptop for me (and the klutzs of the world). I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

I am looking at a 6210, but I currently own an IBM T23 (purchased mid 2002). I travel a lot, use my lappie for work (as a process engineer and methodology designer) so an international warranty is a must have. I love the IBM, it is solid - for example, I can pick it up easily by the screen shroud, I have dropped it, and it performs well every time. The IBM support is also excellent, but the add on bits are really expensive (for example, a DVD writer...).

So, if I'm so in love with it, why am I considering a Fujitsu ? My IBM (as a speedstep 1.13 gHz) cannot do digital video, even after buying a PCMCIA Firewire card etc - at MPEG1 or 2 it really struggles. I think it's time for an upgrade.

Does anyone create DVDs and or VCDs using a 6210? How do they perform, and are there any links you can shoot me too? My camera is a Sony HC30 - not that I think that makes any difference.

Congratulations on an excellent forum and user community.
