Hi, I'm in the market to buy a new portable laptop in the next few months or so. I'm traveling abroad to Japan in April, so I need it before then. I'm not a big gamer, so the main uses would be for internet, word processing, listening/burning music, watching DVDs, editing digital pictures (maybe some video editing). I was looking at first at the Dell 700m, but after some browsing it seems like the Fujitsu S6231 is much better. Are there any other comparable models I sould possibly look into?

I am considering buying a S6231, but I would like to save some money if possible. On Newegg, I see the 6231 for about $1499, and the 6210 for as little as $1179. I know there are differences between the RAM and everything, so I'm not sure if it is really that big of a price difference (maybe it's just the different configurations to account for most of the price differences).

My main question is: Could someone briefly enumerate the differences (advantages/disadvantages) between all the S62XX models, like the 6210, 6220, 6231, or any others?

I would like to compare these with the current prices that they're selling for. Any advice as to whether the newer models are worth the extra money is also welcome.

On a side note, I did purchase a Lifebook C2111 a little over 2 years ago. The hard drive got corrupted at one point and I lost all my data. For this reason I am a bit reluctant to buy Fujitsu again, but I seem to only hear good things about them for the most part. Would anyone happen to have any advice as far as buying an extended warranty or not (how much more would it be?)

Since I can wait a few months, should I wait for the price to drop more, or for new model laptops to be released, or do you think it might be a good idea to get it sooner. (I will definitely USE it as soon as I get it, and I WANT it sooner, but I don't NEED it sooner). I'm looking to spend $1000 to $1200, though if it was really worth it, up to $1500.

I know these are a lot of questions, but I'd appreciate any help and advice.

The Fujitsu 6231 is a very good notebook, I have one right now. The keyboard and processor are improved over the 6210 version. The processor in the 6231 is the latest generation Intel Pentium M Dothan that has more memory cache and power saving enhancements over the previous Intel Pentium M Banias.

You would be right to choose the 6231 over the 700m in my opinion. Also look for notebook prices to drop a bit in the next month or two as Intel drops the price of current processors after releasing new ones this January (Pentium M Alviso).

    It's all very confusing isn't it [:I]

If it's just office and web use, the 6210 will work for you and at a great price.

    6210 - older PM processor
6220 - new Dothan PM processor
    6231 - improved ventilation
