I had absolutely no idea there was a S6000-like laptop with AMD Turion in it. I've been looking at the S6231 since last year and when I looked at it at Fry's, everything looked and felt very good so I had no doubt in my mind which laptop I would buy.

From that point, I've always been told to wait for the S6240, kept reading "just wait another month or two until S6240 comes out" etc. Now that I have waited, my choices has just tripled.

Now, is there any Fujitsu authorized reseller that still sells S6231s? If there isn't that much difference in performance between the S6231 and S6240, I prefer to opt in for the S6231 just because I've had it in my hands and have read plenty of good things about it. The S6240, never had it in my hands and the reviews haven't exactly been as positive as the S6231.

Now that the S2110 is available, my options have basically tripled. Which one should I go with? It'll my very first laptop and my focus is on portability and reliability. I won't be gaming with it or anything like that at max I will have a dozen or two tabs open in Firefox. I've read the S2110 vs. S6231 review and the tradeoffs are similar enough.

    Any input is appreciated.

I must say that I'm quite happy with my s2110. Can be had from P1 starting at 1249 (if you get a 40 gb hard drive) which isn't a bad price, and you get the great portable one service everyone here loves. I can't say I've had much experience with the s6240, but I'm pretty sure the battery life in the s2110 is superior. If you are focussed on portability/battery life, you'll do better with the s2110 (or the s6231, but not s6240). As far as I know, they all use pretty much the same case, so build quality is roughly equal - my s2110 isn't a tank, but is quite solid for my purposes.

Hey Crescentmage, thanks for responding. :)

Yea, I've been going through several different computer-related technical forums and it seems like a lot of people like the Turion since its performance and power usage is comparable to its Intel counterpart. So, so far, I am leaning more and more toward the Turion.

Can you tell me anything about how hot the laptop gets and comment on the fan noise?

    thanks.

When I played with the s2110, I did notice it felt warmer than my S6231, but not enough to make it uncomfortable. I could still use it on my lap.

Also, I was so used to my S6231 being super quiet (the fan really never turns on when set at lower power requirements) that the fan noise of the s2110 was noticeable to me, but not necessarily loud. HOWEVER, if I had never owned the s6231 I would have felt the fan noise was acceptable to me.

I really think if I had never owned the S6231 I would have probably bought the s2110.

At first I was a little annoyed because it seems the fan runs around 80% of the time, even when the air coming out is fairly cool. Luckily it is almost always on the lowest speed, which is very quiet - even in a quiet room it is not very noticeable. As for heat, the notebook can get warm underneath, but not hot - I can use it on my lap comfortably. I will point out that the dvd-burner I got is rather loud, especially when it first starts spinning. I don't know if it is louder than most notebooks, or it just sounds loud next to the relative quiet of the notebook in general.

So it might not be quite as cool and quiet as the 6231, but still very reasonable (much better than my old Inspiron and most other laptops I've worked with).

Good luck with your hunt - no matter which lifebook you pick, I doubt you'll go wrong.

I'm glad I didn't wait and bought the 6231, but once windows vista comes out, I will probably replace the 6231 in the spring of 2007. I want to stay current on my bloatware. :)
