Is there more than 1 OEM and is it the common 12.7mm height or rather the 9.5mm?

I'm debating to get the std combo cdrw/dvd drive and replacing it with the NEC 65xx: is this possible?

    TIA

To my knowledge, there are no dual layer 9.5mm drives. I think Panasonic used to make the old drives, so that would be my guess on the new ones. If you are buying at PortableOne.com, the upgrade to a DVD burner is $100 which is exactly what the NEC is going to cost you. Everything is upgradeable depending on your skill level. You could email P1 find out for sure.

The 6650 is not a 9.5mm drive. They only two I know of are the Panasonic UJ-812 and UJ-822.
