I recently added a single stick of 256 mb ram for a total of 512 mb of ram in this laptop. I've seen benefits in the loading of several programs with the upgrade, but anytime I run a win2k search for files, there is a massive slowdown with a rapid increase in CPU usage on the search alone. I've also seen this occur with bulletin board searches utilizing Mozilla Firefox 1.0.2. Could this issue be caused by the fact that the original ram stick 256 mb was PC2100, whereas the new added stick is PC2700? If anyone has any ideas what is causing this problem, I'd really appreciate the help.

I was told never to stick different types of RAM together.

I'm not a hardware expert but that is only what I was told. Don't know if it has anything to do with your problem though.

I'd first try removing the ram just installed to see if the problem goes away. If not, then the ram wasn't the problem. However, if the problem goes away, and the system is recognizing and utilizing the ram ok, then I don't know what to think.
