Don’t ever go even near Fujitsu S 7020. I was going to buy one. At the shop I said I want to test the notebook right there. We unpacked one and guess what? The LCD"s bottom had a soft white light. We unpacked another one and it had the same issue but sharper! And the third had a bright bottom but not as bright as the first one. I came out and went off.

Thanks for the tip. I was wondering how bad that light leakage is. What laptop are you considering now instead then? Also, did you happen to see any S7020's that don't have the CV to see if light leakage is still bad without CV?

There are several people that haven't had that issue, I wonder what's going on...

From my recent experience, I really think their quality has deteriorated. The reviews I read on this unit last spring (on the S7010 in anticipation of this model) were wonderful; my experience with the unit was pretty poor. I think most people have noticed the lighter, brighter band at the bottom of the screen- it is even visible on the review photographs on this site- but some people are more bothered by it than others. Truthfully, although I noticed it, I didn't focus on it. If the machine was reliable and durable that would not have been an issue for me. However, the frequent BSOD and the cracks, creaks, loose hinges, and variety of other things do make me wonder about recent changes perhaps in quality control or components. Was mine an aberrant lemon- I don't know...but I do know that for the 2K range I expect a durable and reliable piece of equipment, and Fujitsu was not it.

the first one was bad the second one was so bad and the third, you could stand it but there was still a white light there which you could see.

yes. I tested the TFT ones.

Portaturtle- in answer to your question: "What laptop are you considering now instead then?":
Weight was an important consideration for me, so I opted for the Portableone UX, which is a 12.1" ultraportable-3.4 pounds with the 2 hour battery, 4 pounds with the 6-7.5 hour battery. That is a great unit. The screen of the S7020 was bigger (which is why I had chosen it initially) but the UX is a solid, durable, reliable unit. You cannot even begin to compare the build qualities. It doesn't have the screen flex of the Fujitsu, the keyboard is solid, and after a month of use in and out of a messenger bag all day it looks and feels brand new (as it should). Specs are comparable to the Fujtisu, so performance should be similar, although the UX comes with a 7200 rpm hard drive; I don't know why, but the boot-up time of the UX is much faster, with the same major programs loaded.

I thought the smaller keyboard and decrease in screen size would be an issue, but it is not. The UX's keyboard is the full width of the machine and is very responsive, and while I generally hate small keyboards, the full-sized keys on this unit are great. The screen is amazingly clear and, while of course a 14" would be nice, it is not missed. Anyway- if you want more info. on it- I wrote up a "first impressions" of the UX in the Portableone forum. Since I spent hours agonizing over the same issue, I just wanted to throw my two cents in.

Thanks for your input m61376. The thing that I will miss in the UX is the lack of fingerprint sensor and thumbpoint. I really like the thumbpoint and with increased travelling, the extra security (not to mention convenience) of a fingerprint sensor is hard to ignore.

    I'm using the S7011 Asia-Pacific Version,
I do see the soft white light leakage, but it depends where u viewing it, on my review, if u look straight direct (eye-level) then u won't see it. Do a search on my review, i have a picture as well.

The Compaq looks nice but it's only in Indonesia. =( No stateside purchase I think.

Did you take a look at light leak for the S6240? How was the leak in that one?

Too bad... I heard/read that it wasn't as bad as the S7 series but I wanted to get as many thoughts on that as I could find. =)

I my self will not go for any other Fujitsu product ever.

I believe Dell [Latitude] has the best build quality. (I have worked with Sony, Dell, HP, Compaq, and have seen the Fujitsu)

Does anyone know if this issue also affect the other S models (S6240 and S2110) ?

Get a P7010/P7020. One of the very best screens you can buy for any notebook -- bright, vibrant, and absolutely no light leakage.

Fujitsu's build quality is really one of the best, i'm pretty suprised by this actually, i wouldn't expect this at all.

If anyone wants a S7011 and is somewhat nervous, just get it from portableone.com they won't even send you one with a light leak that bad or any leak whatso ever.

I am a huge Portableone fan...but even they can only send you what Fujitsu is building. The light leakage on the bottom of the s7020's is there; it seems to be a universal feature of the screens. I think it just bothers some people more than others. Personally, I noticed it, but it wasn't a big deal to me. However, its reliability and durability - or lack thereof- were. I think they are cutting corners and their quality control is suffering, which is why some people are thrilled with their units and others aren't. There was a time when they built all their own units, but just like IBM did maybe 5 years ago, they are now subcontracting, and once assembly goes out of house quality begins to deteriorate.

If you do decide to go with a Fujitsu, I cannot recommend Portableone highly enough; not only are they a great company to deal with regardless, but given the fact that at least some people have been unhappy with their units (perhaps they were just lemons, I don't know), it is great to shell out 2K knowing that the place you bought it from will stand by you.
