I have had a Fujitsu S6231 for about 6 months and am quite pleased with it. However, recently I have noticed some tiny spots/marks on the screen which refuse to go away. They are not dead pixels. Its almost as if at those spots the glossy screen has lost its 'glossiness'.
I have heard that screens are not covered under warranty and to replace them the customer has to bear the entire bill.
Any suggestions as to what I should do now?
Thanks in advance.

Can you see the spots when the screen is on, or only when it is off?
I was getting tiny scratch marks from my keyboard on the monitor before...but I could only see them when the screen was off. Now I just put a piece of paper between the screen and the keyboard when I carry it around and there are no more scratches. (I carry it around in my knapsack 6 days a week with other heavy textbooks which probably push the lid down on to the keyboard) -
Usually when the screen is off. Its not a scratch from the keyboard. Its more like a mark. I use an alcohol based product to clean my keyboard once in a while. I am now wondering whether this could have caused it. Any thoughts?
Thanks. -
If it's only alcohol, that should be fine. Try buffing with a microfiber cloth.

I called Fujitsu and spoke with a customer service representative. It seems that the screen has started cracking. There are these "water marks" on the screen which is an indication that the screen has started cracking.
Since the screen is NOT covered under the guarantee, I'll probably have to pay for the new screen. This is really depressing.
Thanks to Brian and Nandor for your inputs. -
Sorry to hear about your screen problem. I just bought a S2110 from fujitsu and opt'ed to get the screen protection (3 yrs). Costs an arm/leg but hopefully worth the peace of mind. I understand that a screen replacement costs about $755.00! hearing about your unfortunate developement makes me think I might have made the right move regarding this option.
Let us know how this story ends if you can. -
So if this issue has not resulted from droppage, etc, then you have every right to expect the laptop to function in the expected manner.

I concur. I'd file a complaint with the BBB online, I'd bet you get a replacement.

I am wondering if those screen cracks that have happened with more than one user till now are caused by the screen being under pressure at some spots within its bezel. If so then Fujitsu are liable to exchange screens, because this would be considered a manufacturing defect.

I called Fujitsu and got an RMA #. I'll probably send the notebook by the 22nd and keep my fingers crossed. They'll let me know whether they'll replace it for free or whether I will have to pay for the replacement.
Yes, a new screen does cost something close to $750, something a poor student like me can't afford. Its just that I spent close to $1600 on this notebook and had to have the darned luck of getting a defective screen.
Thanks to all for all the inputs. SQ. -
How in the world does a person get cracks in their screen. How are you carrying it? Is it getting crushed in your backpack with a bunch of textbooks? If so check out some better notebook bags.
www.tombihn.com sells great notebook bags
www.shaggymac.com sells this lil cloth thing you put over your keyboard to protect the screen when your notebook is closed. Its stupidly simple but I like it. -
I think I know what you are talking about, because I have the same white spot (only 1 so far) on s6231. The notebook has never left my house though, I never carry it anywhere and eventhough it's 8 month old now it still looks like new, I will be Rmaing mine as well.

Fujitsu did replace the screen free of charge after all. Unfortunately the new screen came with a dead pixel. Oh well!
Thanks for all the comments. SQ. -
1 dead pixel passes their dead pixel policy. (The annoyance of dealing with fujitsu directly and not P1). It's not in the center of the screen, is it? I used a notebook for 4 years with a dead pixel on the side and never noticed it, but the ones in the center can be a bit annoying.
But at least you saved on replacing the panel, which practically costs as much as a low end new notebook!
