Others may have seen this already, but I thought I would point out that the S7020 is now on the main Fujitsu site here:
    http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/products/mobile/notebooks/lifebook_s.html
They say coming in May 05.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but it doesn’t look like a big change.

From what I can tell looks like they will be offering XGA with and without Crystal View, the new 915 chipset, and the new express card (I don’t know if this is a change from the 7010).

Here is a press release for the German release: http://tinyurl.com/3wld2

Not to mention the IBM is much much more expensive.

I'm actually not seeing where the the CrystalView is in the PDF spec sheet, but in the press release it refers to "Glare and Non-Glare" (how did the marketing folks let that slip, glare isn't exactly a selling term) so I'll assume that there is at least one config that has XGA CrystalView. Other than the processor bump and ExpressCard option I agree that at a first glance there's not too much different. Still, in choosing between this and a ThinkPad T43 I'm kind of torn. IBM shunning a media card reader and IEEE interface sort of makes me want this.

One other change to note (thanks for pointing this out, abaxter) is that the S7020 now has an s-video out. This is kind of a big deal to me as I was a little disappointed that the S7010 did not have this.

Does anyone know how one could hook up a notebook to a television without an s-video port?

    Thanks,
    Terry

Looks like a fairly minor update... kind of disappointed they still don't offer an option for a dedicated video card.

I believe there are PCMCIA and USB tools to accomplish that.

Hmm..., this looks like a very good notebook. I like the fact that it is soo light, and will be based on the Sonoma core. Also, one more thing I noticed from that website, which I think is fairly significant (to me anyways), is that " Hard disk drive 40 / 60 / 80 GByte S-ATA 150". The keyword being SATA. That should boost performance due to the Native command queing ability of SATAs.

Also, don't know if this the place to ask, but what is the difference between the S7xxx and the S6xxx serires? They both seem to be based on centrino processors, etc. Which is better? What are the major diff? Thanks

I seem to continously read that the upcoming S7000 series update will come with a SD/MMC card reader... But looking at the pics, I can't seem to identify the actual card slot. Could anyone clarify to me if this is a typo, or that I'm just not looking at the right place???

Actually between SATA running at 5400RPM and PATA running at 7200RPM there wont be much of a difference, and maybe the PATA 7200RPM for now will still be a bit faster. But for the future you can hope for a SATA 7200RPM once they become available.

As for the difference between the S7 and S6 it is mainly the screen size 14.1 vs 13.3. Both are good but the S6 is more popular because, although weighing the same, the S6 is a bit smaller, and since this is a thin and light the smaller the better for mobility!

Why doesn't Fujitsu offer dedicated graphics in one of the S series models? It seems like the 7xxx series and 6xxx series are going for the same basic audience just a slight size increase from one to the other. That's my only complaint with Fujitsu, that they don't offer dedicated graphics in the thin and light sector.

I understand your frustration, but they're very business oriented and that user doesn't need or want to pay for dedicated graphics. This point can't be more clear than in the IBM example. With the new T43 they're offering integrated graphics for the first time, after offering only dedicated in prior models. Now, it would be nice if Fujitsu gave us some options, but I suppose it's just not worth it to them to do so.

Actually many websites that discuss about the upcoming S7020, state that the new model will come with a SD/Memorystick reader. Here is an excerpt from the news section of this website:

New Fujitsu Lifebook S7020 Due in May With Intel Sonoma Pentium M

The Fujitsu S7000 series is a thin and light 14" screen Pentium M based notebook series. Fujitsu today announced that they will be giving the S7000 line a refresh by releasing the S7020 this May, the S7010 is the current selling model. The S7020 will have the latest Intel Sonoma Pentium M platform processors, 3 different screen options (XGA, XGA with CrystalView and SXGA), ExpressCard slot, dual pointing devices, SD/MemoryStick card reader built-in, FireWire, Wireless, S-Video out and the same great design and light weight that the S7000 series is known for. This is a great laptop and well worth a look at for those who are business professionals that like a bit more style than maybe an IBM ThinkPad offers.

I need a laptop by June for work and was thinking of getting the S7010. Given that the S7020 is coming out in a month or two, do you guys think it's worth it to wait?

Also, what do guys think of the S7010/20 vs the Sony Vaio S series?

    Thanks for your input!

    newguy,

Well if you need a laptop in June, and the S7020 is coming out in May, you will have it in time. As for the comparison, I don't know, hopefully others here will give their input.

I was hoping this refresh of any of the S series would have the option to opt for dedicated graphics or integrated.. as in the E series' update. Oh wells, I'll sacrifice weight in order to get more with the E. [ :D] unless there is such a thing as an external graphics card you can plug in :p

I like the Sony S for it's dedicated graphics, but other than that, the Fujitsu is the way to go.
