Can you guys help me with finding the right Fujitsu for my purposes? I've never heard of Fujitsu before coming onto this website and looking around at the forums, so I have no idea which one of their models is good for me. Right now I'm juggling between getting a Fujitsu or a Dell 700m, I'm still doing some research so I'm asking around.

What I basically need the laptop for is basic computing. Surfing the web, word processing, maybe a little imaging, and lots of DVD viewing. I also need it to be DVDR/RW and WiFi for the college campus (which is a year away, I'm thinking ahead). I don't play games, so I don't think I need an aggressive video card except for maybe the said movie viewing. The laptop will be on constantly, maybe 24/7 for downloading and such. I need it to be light weight and between a 12" to 14" screen. Any suggestions? Oh, and I also need the laptop to last for at least 3 years.

2 fujitsu laptops fit your specs, the S6000 and S7000 series (thin and lights). The current models of each S6231 and S7010 are being replaced in the next couple of months.

The S6000 is a 13.3" and S7000 is a 14". Both weighing almost the same. Can be equiped with dual batteries in case that is important to you (2nd battery goes in place of optical drive). Both have optional DVDRWs, and the new releases will have Dual Layer DVDRWs in case you care.

Build quality is excellent, customer service also excellent, and screen quality one of the best if not the best. BUT none is wide screen (since you are looking at a wide screen dell).

The new releases will have the sonoma platform and the improved built intel built in graphics. More than enough for your needs. you'll find reviews for both on this site. (the newer models are almost identical exteriorly, only interior changes ... sonoma)

    N6010: P4M 3.2G, 1GB Dual 400MHz, 60GB 7200RPM, ATI 9700M, 17" WXGA+

I would advise you to consider it and listen to others' opinion. I seem to be the only one here who would pick the older centrino platform over the newer one. [ :D]

    Advantage of waiting:
    5% increase in speed
    better built in graphics
    maybe an improved screen.
    finger print scanner

    disadvantages:
    more consumption of power
    more heat
    shorter battery life.

Since I always consider mobility and comfort of use on lap (heat) I would pick the older model any day!

I think I'll get the S6000 then, the 13.3" screen is a nice compromise (I'm afraid the 12.1" Dell will be too small). Do you think it's worth it to wait for the newer models?

I think qwester makes some great recommendations here, the S6231 is a particular favorite of mine. Just a great machine, very portable, very well built and very nice screen. Plus it looks nice and it's kinda cool to buy something that not everybody and their brother has (ahhem, a Dell, HP or Toshiba laptop).

It is a good point to say that the newer and faster S6000 that will be released soon (the S6240) isn't necessarily going to be a whole lot better than what's available now. It's when a manufacturer changes the design, screen or input features of a laptop that you really start to get product differentiation in the same line -- but the upcoming release will just be a faster processor and graphics. It might still be worth waiting because when a new product is released the older one will often drop in price.

You might not really see that price drop in the old s6 vs new s6. In another thread that I can seem to find, Brian pointed out that fujitsu doesn't keep lots of stock on hand so the new models just replace the older ones and prices stay pretty constant.

Noah's right, they don't keep inventory, so there will be very little to sell through when the new ones come out.
