As cost is a huge consideration at this point, I was wondering how easy it is to upgrade these ultraportables down the road.

Specifically, RAM and hard drives. Is this something as simple as a few screws and popping in new components? Is the CPU soldered in? Or (fingers crossed) some sort of ginchy ZIF set-up?

    Thanks![ ;)]

RAM is easy but expensive, there is only one slot. The drives are also easy to replace, but the chipset is a no go from what I've seen.

What kind of RAM is it? I can't find any info or specs on the type of RAM it uses. As we all know, the cost of RAM and hard drives keeps going down every day. It might be prudent for a spendthrift like me to make do with the minimum and upgrade when prices come down significantly or the deficiency just becomes too unbearable.

You'd have to ask Fujitsu or one of the resellers about specifics, but if you want to upgrade, you basically throw away the investment you make now in the RAM. I think laptops inc offers the 1GB upgrade for $399. If you think you want that much, do it up front.

This is the kind of ram you need:

    PC2100 DDR 200-pin SO-DIMMs (266MHz)

It is very easy to upgrade, the top is 1GHz. I wouldnt say to do it up front though, laptop inc offers 512MB free upgrade & 1GHz upgrade for $400, so if you bought the 1Ghz chip for $355 at http://dealram.com/ramclick.html?93129 you could sell the 512 you got for about $70 on ebay and in turn your 1ghz would be $285, which is a pretty good price compared to $400

Yeah, I think you're right Myke. I still have my order open with Laptopsinc, though so far I haven't been that impressed with their customer service. They haven't responded to a single email I've sent. And when I tried to call, I got a dead line. The second time got through, but I was put on hold a whole bunch of times. How big is this operation?

Anyway, welcome Myke. I notice you're on the LeoG.net forum. I registered, but cannot log in for some reason there. And the admin isn't responding to my emails. Can you PM LeoG and ask him what the dealio is? I've tried accessing from both a PC and a Mac. TIA[ ;)]
