I just got my S6231 on Tuesday and it's in perfect condition. I ordered it from P1 and Ivan and his staff were just superb. I sent Ivan an e-mail last night telling him so. They are such a professional bunch. I have been using a Dell 600m for the last year and a half and there is honestly no comparison between the two products. The Crystal View screen on the S6231 is so bright and clear and came with no dead pixels at all! There are 8 brightness settings and I am using it at the number 5 setting and it's plenty bright for me.
I configured the unit with 512MB RAM, single stick and bought another 512MB module from Crucial right after I placed my order from P1. Immediately after unpacking and testing the unit, I installed the second module of RAM in and the machine booted up flawlessly, immediately recognizing the new RAM. The installation of the RAM was so simple. Just unscrewed the little flap on the bottom, popped it in and screwed the lid back up. I swear it took all of about a minute. I remember when I did the same thing with my 600m, I had trouble getting the RAM module to fit into the slot and then it wouldn't boot up right away. It must have taken three tries to get it to accept it. This one went without a hitch and I was very pleased.
When I boot it up, the fan goes on, but only for a few seconds. Boot up time is incredibly fast and so quiet. The fan goes on occasionally but it so quiet I rarely notice it. Last night, I thought I heard it running but wasn't sure so I held it up to my hear to confirm that it was on. That's how quiet it is. By comparison, my Dell would grind and crank and take what seemed like a couple of minutes to boot. Then the fan would run for what seemed like minutes on end for no reason. The S6231 also recognizes my wireless router immediately, which the same cannot be said for the Dell and it maintains an Excellent signal throughout my house as well as half way into my back yard which is about 50 feet from my access point. The keyboard feels very solid with no noticeable flex. I'm not a gamer and I use my program for basic e-mail, internet browsing, Word/Excel documents and occassional photo editing but the S6231 has so far, handled all these apps very responsively.
The other great thing about this computer is the size. It feels so light and compact. When it's in my bag, it's hardly noticeable. I will actually need to get a smaller bag because it kind of swims in the bag I'm using now. I was somewhat concerned when I ordered this computer because I was going from a 14 inch screen to a 13.3 inch screen, but the difference is hardly noticeable. I actually prefer this size anyway. I really wanted something that I could pull out and use basically anywhere and this certainly fits the bill.
I absolutely love this laptop and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a solidly built, thin and light notebook with a spectacular screen. Although if you're into gaming, you might want to look elsewhere or consider the N6010 because the graphics on the S6231 are integrated. Again, I also want to praise P1 for their great service.

Great review. I've had my 6231 for about 2 months, and agree 100% with all of the things you mention - best LCD screen on the planet, perfect size, lightweight, great wireless, etc.
I will add that the screen is "outdoor" viewable. You can actually use this laptop outside. [8D] I've been waiting years for a screen that doesn't wash out in sunlight.
I purchased the battery that goes into the DVD bay. The battery meter shows 7 hours with this battery in.
Its so portable I take it everywhere, including in my plane, where it is used to run flightplanning and gps/weather software.
(I purchased a bluetooth PCMCIA card to connect with a bluetooth GPS)

I haven't had much of a chance to use it outside yet but do plan on trying it outdoors this weekend. One of the things that also appealed to me about the CV screen was the ability to use it outdoors without having to deal with the glare, etc. I also plan on buying the extended bay battery because I've been getting 3 1/2 to 4 hours so far with the standard battery and for me to be "completely mobile" I like to have a capacity of at least 6-8 hours. Glad to hear you're enjoying yours too! [8D]

I concur, great review. That type of spirit I'd like to read in magazine reviews, but frequently reviewers are boring and focus on minutia that few people care about, and they're uninteresting like they're faking an orgasm rather than true enthusiasts.

Kirby:
I hoping to buy a S6000 when the refresh happens, but for now, I have a couple of questions for you regarding your S6000 purchase.
1. What type of ram did you buy from Crucial and how much did you buy it for?
2. What bags are currently available for the 13.3" monitor so that the laptop won't "swim" and how much do you that will cost?
This might be one of my first big purchases, not being so dependent on my parents, and so i'm starting to feel paranoid in dropping so much cash! I want to protect my investment! haha
Thanks man!

I bought 512MB DDR PC2700 RAM from Crucial. The list price was something like $96 and then I had a 5% off coupon code through PC World magazine. I usually buy RAM from either Crucial or Memory Suppliers, just dpends on who has the better deal at the time. Their modules are always guaranteed compatible and they've always worked for me.
Coincidently today, I bought a new backback for the S6231 through eBags. I bought the Samsonite Groove model which is a discontinued model that they had marked down to $19.99, including shipping. I applied a 25% off coupon from a prior purchase which brought the price with shipping down to less than $19. The bag is supposed to be designed for smaller laptops and I confirmed that it should fit based on the dimensions provided. It had gotten some pretty good reviews on the site so I figured for less than $20, I can't go too wrong. Plus Samsonite is a quality brand. I don't do a lot of traveling with it and I didn't want to spend upwards of $100 or more on something that wasn't leaving the house very often.
I don't think you can go wrong with this laptop. Good luck in your search.
