    Hi all,

I just recieved my Fujitsu S7020D a little less than a week ago. This is my first laptop. I just wanted to know who else has the S7020 or S7020D. I must say I am very impressed with this laptop. The only two things I have questions with, mainly because it is my first laptop, is regarding heat and fan. First, how hot are these laptops suppose to get? I read another post from a person who has this model, and she said it was warm but not hot. My question is, what is hot? Basically, on mine, the bottom left area of the laptop gets hot (where I guess the HD is). On the keyboard, you obviously can't feel it, but on the bottom left black part, and about half of the touchpad gets hot. The underside is a different story. That gets much hotter than the top, but I guess that is to be expected? I just want to make sure my laptop isn't getting hotter than it is suppose to (incase something is wrong with it). Second, is about the fan. There seems to be one fan located on the left side panel towards the back. It is relatively quite, and doesn't come on very much or for very long. My question is, should it come on more often, and if not, is there a way to make it come on when I want it to, because that should help disapate the heat build up on the left side, right? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

You might wanna use CHC or SpeedswitchXP to control speed of CPU, that will definately help heat control. Also, i put "feet" to raise up the laptop from the table about 1mm just so air can flow. Try that. If my CPU is 100% yeh it's a little hot, i would say, it wouldn't burn you but you can feel it's hot.. and the fan works all the time, but if normal usage, internet/email/excel, it's a little warm, and fan rarely comes on. hope this helps...

How do you like the S7020 so far? How is they keyboard--I've heard that they "flex" a little. How is the screen? Overall, would you recommend it? Thanks, Dan

    Hi,

My S7020D is NOT hot at all.

But the fan runs 95% of the time.

    What might be the problem?

    Thanks,

@chill: I don't have an S7020D but an E8020D. However, as far as I know their major architecture is quite similar. And I have the same (or a similar) problem as you do. The fan runs most of the time, which is very annoying. It does not run right from the start but after using the laptop for a while. The laptop is not hot at all and the air being blown out is not hot at all, either.

I wonder whether it has something to do with the fact that both these laptops use the new Sonoma platform, which is said to become hotter. Then again, I think I would feel it if it really got that hot.

@sutheep: Which laptop model do you have? The S7020D? Unfortunately, most Lifebooks models do not support temperature monitoring (except for HDD temperature), so it is not possible to check the CPU or mainboard temperature.
For my laptop, NHC (Notebbook Hardware Control, former CHC) did not help to keep the fan from running. By the way, in these laptops the CPU frequency is regulated automatically by Intel's Enhanced SpeedStep Technology. When the CPU is idle, it runs at only 800 MHz instead of the maximum 2.0 GHz. NHC is not needed for that. The voltage and the multiplier are also regulated automatically. The only advantage of NHC is that it can be used to set the voltages somewhat lower than the standard values. Apart from that, there is no real need for NHC.
What material did you use to put "feet" onto your laptop? Doesn't the S7020D already have some rubber "feet"?

    Hi all!

The S7020 does have major heat and fan problems. Please have a look at the posts in the Fujitsu-Siemens forum (particularily this one). There are a lot of people (me included) who are really concerned about this.

    Cheers

I have had a 7020D for about 4 months now.

It does heat up a bit underneath the left palm when you type (lower left on the laptop body)....i dont 'mind it. To help cool it and keep my laptop optimal I use laptop legs to prop up my laptop all the time. I swear this isn't an advertisement....they are pretty sweet. I won't post their website cuz i think there are several different companies that make em.

anyways...aside from that I wish I had gotten the crystal bright version, but I do academic work so I wanted the bigger screen.

I upgraded my ram to a gig. Pretty sweet. prolly gonna sell the 256 i took out on ebay, just haven't gotten around to it.

I ordered the extended battery which is pretty nasty cuz I can last about 4.5 hours on it with heavy use (note that it says it can be up to 6 hours but tha'ts if you are only using light processing apps......music/multimedia stuff/even wireless internet will drain more power).

By the way, this is my first laptop too. sorry that was such a disjointed post. gotta get going though.

overall: awesome light laptop for me. but i wish i wish i had gotten the crystal bright screen!
