I am also very interested in this notebook and have not found any reviews. I wouldn't say its too new as its been out for at least 2 months which in computing terms is last year ;)

I think that many people would benefit from a review on this laptop. I've been wanting a laptop like this for a while, and looked at the M3438G, but the lagging thing put me off buying one of them.

A review would be great, seeing as how I have found none on the internet.

rwyke: I just read from someone on this forum that the GPU is underclocked badly. Is this true or not and can you test it?

As it arrived in the box, without changing any settings at all it says:
    Core Clock 392MHz
    Memory Clock 252MHz

??This may be dependant on power saving stuff??

I've only had time to install doom and let my brother (i don't play games at all) have 30 minutes with it and he said it was pretty good, i'll get him to install some other games and see what its like.

Possibily dependent on power-saving settings and stuff.

Well I found that standard core clock is 450mhz meaning that your x1800 has been underclocked by 13%(rounded from 12.88% recurring). I haven't found a memory clock figure yet. But do note that companies can change the clocks to suit the notebook design, usually to aid in cooling, as is explicitly demonstrated by the MBP. Source is just ATI's page: http://www.ati.com/products/MobilityRadeonx1800/index.html

252 Mhz seems a bit low. I thought that the clock for that card was 500 Mhz, (1000 Mhz effective). Correct me if i am wrong.

Interestingly the Catalyst Control Centre in Vista Beta 2 reports 398/486 Core/Mem Clock so maybe thats more accurate?

I would suspect that the 486 Mhz memeroy, is more accurate. Anway, just out of curiosity, what are the temps like on it. As you said before, it may be that the clocks are lowered to reduce power consumption, and maybe to reduce temperatures. Just a thought.

Yeh a review would be all good, and some nice camera shots please ;) It's a hard notebook to find info on and pictures. Can get quite a good spec one in the UK for about £1200ish but they still have no stock  and keep delaying the release date.
But people have already shown quite a big interest about it on this forum so a review would be welcomed with open arms :)

On the subject of reviews, I heard that Alienware also have a version of this laptop. Same internal structure, and spec, but a different exterior. They did this last time with Fujitsu's Amilo M3438G. Maybe, we could find a review for that laptop.

dont know if you read the partial one available here

    Amilo Xi1546 First Impressions Review

Yeah they didnt have any yesterday as I phoned them but they did say should be online today and low and behold they are!

just need to see those reviews and then splash the cash on it! 1049.99 is a bargain i think! even if its another 120 odd to buy 2gb of ram and fit it myself.

also its basically the alienware m5750 according to what i have read so thats a good sign that its a decent laptop without many problems.

Where can you get 2gb of ram for £120?? I had a look at crucial and they want abot £170 for 2 1gb sticks.Do you know if it has 1 stick of 1gb or 2 of 512mb? I'm just being lazy and should ring them myself.
But it's a very tempting lapy.I was going to hold off for a month or too(going back to NZ to get married) and get a M1710 with a duo 2 when i get back, but it's a whole heap more money.

    Laptop Memory

Its gone up a few quid today so it would make it about £130 for 2 sticks.

Um good question on the is it one or two sticks of ram currently in the machine am not sure my hope is that it would be one cause then real cheap upgrade but most likely 2*512 in there currently.

rwyke can you confirm the laptop comes with 2*512mb out of the box configuration

so orca logic still cheapest on memory plus transcend better than integral as far as i know.

not sure on the 667mhz i guess it would take it as it can always down clock it to 533 if it wont run natively at 667

cheers for that! well just the review now i guess though am very tempted to buy the 013 model today from OneandOne and then get the extra memory from Orca which works out at 1049.99 for the laptop plus 131.36 for the memory totalling 1181.35 altogether a bargain thats for sure! plus ought to be able to get a bit of money selling the 512mb sticks.

I think that there is one USB on the left, and the other three are placed on the right.

I found some 1GB OCZ memory, so two of these should be alright, and the rpice is about £104:

Thats cheap ram, any thoughs on the under clocking of the x1800? seems the current version of tool trays does not allow you to speed it up.
I posted a thread in the gaming section,be interested if there is afix in the pipeline.

personally wouldnt buy dell ever they just useless once your moneys gone could be months before you get your kit and hope you never have to deal with tech support as that is a farce.

core duo 2 i believe can be put into the current slot of the core duo so i have read on alot of different places so you could upgrade that in future, it will probably be a bit faster and is 64bit but unless you plan to run vista in the near future (i should probably say distant future as it will be released here no here no here well sometime possibly when duke nukem forever comes out!) then there is no real need for it. Also anyone that wants to use vista before the first service pack be my guest we all know what XP was like!

The x1800 i would imagine will last quite a while due to it being top of the range and mobile chips last alot longer than desktop equivalents add to that the fact the next major change will be dx10 mobile chips at some point i would say its pretty safe option to go with now, again the x1800 is mxmIII so whatever is released next might well be compatible so would provide an upgrade path in the future if needed.

In all honesty that laptop should do well for a few years as 64bit computing isnt here yet and when we do get it going to take a few years to have everything programmed for it, also if alienware sell it as the top of the range its got to be doing something right as they go for a niche enthusiast and high spec market which usually means people dont buy if its only going to last a short period of time.
