Hi guys I have a 1 year old Amilo xi1546 1.83ghz core duo, what I want to know is it possible to upgrade the cpu to a 2.0 ghz cpu ie...T2700 or will a 2.0ghz T7200 core 2 duo fit and work ok, and is it an easy job to do.
Also where in the UK can I get the cables/parts needed for fitting the second hard drive. Once second HD is fitted can you choose what HD to boot into as I want to run vista on one and xp on the other or is it treated as one HD with information split between the two drives.
thanks.

All you need to buy is a screwdriver, a CPU(2500, 2600 ,or 7200 higher models might not be as cost/effective), a good thermal paste and thermal cleaning material( http://www.arcticsilver.com/arcticlean.htm). I've recently reapplied thermal paste on my processor and found out that its extremely easy to change the CPU as well.
Last posts link there by ronkotus will give you an idea of how its done.

Worst case scenario go on the nearest PCWorld and ask if possible to install the CPU for you. Usualy charge 50-60 quid at least excluding the processor cost.
Doesn't your model already has 2 HDs? Don't know if any aditional material are required. However, I currently have both OS installed on seperate HDs. Both Vista and XP are running fine, but both HDs are mutualy excluded through the device manager of each OS. Boot selection is done using F12 in my case in order to avoid Vista's Boot Manager.
Suggested configuration HD1: Vista as its easier to remove from laptop.
HD2: XP, linux etc
I Highly recommend removing the Primary HD before installing an OS on the second HD in order to avoid conficts. This way Vista nor XP(Second OS) won't "see" each other and cause problems to your MBR. Futhermore, I had Powerlinux (remote control/ PowerDvD related driver) removed from XP startup as it was corrupting the MBR of the other HD whenever the remote control was being used.
If this happens, don't panic its easy to fix, all you have to do is to remove the primary disk, use the repair option from the Windows CD and type FIXMBR [drive]. If the primary disks MBR is corrupted its the same without removing the HD. -
Hi mark81, thanks for the help just what I was looking for on he cpu removal, as for the second hard drive no I don't have one.
My amilo came from http://www.nice-pc.co.uk/ and it was the very first model of the xi1546 to come out, they weren't fitted with the extra HD, the parts I need are in this link http://www.amilo-forum.com/topic,31,-Mx438-2nd-sATA-HDD-part-list.html but the supplier is in Germany I emailed them but they wont ship outside of Germany, so no idea were I can get the parts from now.
thanks once again for you reply
cheers.
