hi all im wondering if anyone has any idea if its possible to remove the dvd-r i have in my xa 1526.

(note : my location is the UK but any drives i should find easily localy)

ive upgraded the memory, cpu, hardrives and that was easy enough but i dont seem to see much info on whether the dvd drive can be removed and if so what would i have to look for as replacement as in slim-line or superslim or ultraslim.

the laptop has a optiarc 8x ad-7540a which supposodly as in every review i see states it can write at 8x on dvd-r and dvd+r tho mine seems to only manage 6x.

spec :8x Multi format DVD burner with double layer support
Read speed: CDROM 24x, DVDROM 8x
    Write Speed: CDR 24x, CDRW 20x. DVD+R 6x,
    DVDR 6x, DVD+RW 4x, DVD-RW 4x,
    DVD+R DL (Double Layer 8.5GB) 2,4x

i wondered if it was possible to buy myself a 8x or even 16x dvd-r writer and any suggestions?

p.s i dont use dual layer and i never use rewritables and also never use dvd+R
    if that helps.

    thankyou

Most notebook burners are 12.5mm (1/2") thick although there are a few which are thinner. The ad-7540a looks to be the standard slimline thickness.

You should be able to find 8X speed but this is the ceiling for notebook burners. I've never had problems with the Liteon burners and there is an easy region-free work-around for them.

main thing i cant understand is why all advertisments and google links that go to the 7540a say its 8x yet mine is 6x for dvd-r?

the manual says 6x and nero says 6x.

anyway as i mentioned is the NEC AD-5540A-0B Slimline DVD R/RW Black 8x any good as it looks identical to mine only its 8x and it also optiarc so it will have same dimensions as mine.

also you never mentioned if its at all possible to remove the existing drive as i could not find a reference to this procedure?

but thankyou for your assistance and advice on buying a liteon which are a good desktop dvdwr manufaturer but id rather stick to an optiarc for full compatability issues :)

    whats your opinion?
