I just received my Sony S260 and really like everything about it, EXCEPT the fan noise, which I don't think I will get used to. Can owners of the P7010 comment on how often the fan comes on when doing just basic activities such as surfing the web? I am thinking about returning my Sony and buying the P7010 instead. My other laptop is a Sony Z1, which is awesome and very quiet, but the S260 is not.

    Thanks for the input.

The fan on the P7 doesn't come on that much, but it does come on more than the prior model, the P5020. Part of it is the faster processor I'm sure.

Anyway, it really doesn't bother me at all. I'd estimate it's used less than 25% of the time unplugged and a little more when plugged in.

    Brian,

Thanks for the info. I don't even mind when the fan comes on, just as long as it's not so loud you can't concentrate. With my new Sony S260, it is quite loud when it kicks on. Worse, it comes on just when launching my browser and doing nothing else. So, I'll be sending it back and giving the P7010 a try. It seems like a better value than the Sony anyway.

It is a better value...and if you're concerned about volume, I think you'll be okay with this.

If you use the P7010D in a normal office environment, I doubt you'll hear the fan. It's pretty quiet. But in a very quiet environment (say, at home at night) it's loud enough to be annoying. The P5020D runs cooler, the P7010D's fan runs harder even under low CPU load.

The fan doesn't bother me at all, even at home when it's quiet...just a difference of opinion I suppose.
