it is a tiny, beautiful thing!! still working on upgraging to XP Pro and installing software, but a strange thing occured:
About the 3rd time i turned it on, after 2.5 hours or so of on-time, the speakers started emmitting a crackling static that got progressively louder, quite loud, and then faded back out to nothing after about 7 minutes. system sound was still working with the static, and it's still working now, after it's gone.
It kind of sounded like something was burning in / shorting out a bit. anyone experience anything like this? i'm inclined to ignore it, but should i be concerned the sound card / mobo is bad?
mesmerized by 13.3" screen...

The display is near perfect isn't it?
As for the crackle, I have not experienced this, nor have I heard it reported anywhere. Sorry I can't be of more help. If it doesn't happen again though, I'd not worry about it.

well, now it's happening every time i turn it on, for about 2 minutes, same scenario: starts of kinda quiet and just static, sounds like light rain outside, then crackling starts and gets progressively louder until it's quite loud, then gets sparse and stops. The static responds somewhat to volume control, but can't get turned all the way off w/ mute.
I think i have to overcome my denial and send it back .... []

Try removing and re-adding the audio drivers first. Then call tech support.

thanks Brian -- someone at work just suggested the same thing. it appears to be heat-related (when laptop is cold), so i'm not sure it's the driver, but I'll give it a shot -- i REALLY don't want to send it back...
First impressions:
- 13.3" screen is AMAZING (brighteer and crisper than any i've seen) and plenty big enough
- form factor is awesome (perfect size and very light) and w/ 2nd bay battery, life is about 7 hours!!!
- build quality: compared w/ PowerBook, it's still plastiky, but a lot nicer than most PC laptops
- major drawbacks: the LCD display really needs a backlight -- there is no way to even tell if the caps lock is on w/o sticking your nose 3 inches above the keyboard, and if it's dark you'd better carry a flashlight.

SO, i reinstalled the audio drivers, and it hasn't happened again [
] PHEW!!!! I am so relieved. That was a very strange sound -- just like the MOBO was shorting out and about to go up in smoke.
Thanks Brian -- good call!
just got my s6220...
