I'm a student and have pretty much decided on buying the s6210. I recently saw they came out with the s6220.

i think the only difference is the Dothan 735 processor. Is that the only one? Is this worth the price of the upgrade if I will not be gaming or doing any video editing?

The most intense program I will likely be running is photoshop.
    Thanks

I choose the 6210 for exactly that reason, photoshop. for the difference in the CPU question, it's depend on how much(price wise) is the difference, but for photoshop works, I'll say spend the money on more memory and the performance is much more noticable. of cause, this is all depend on your image size, how many layers and how many pictures you will be working at the same time. But you would want the minimum of 512MB to start with. I work w/ 6MP RAW from a dRebel, so it's 6MP at 16bit, and generally a 2 layer minimum. I could get away with 512, but that mean I can only open one picture, 2 is the max w/o taxing a harddrive(swapfile). so if you will have other program open at the same time, or want to listen to mp3 while you works, then 768+ is what you want. I just decide not want to upgrade the memory later and get the 1GB RAM instead.
PS: my setup(see my sig) is cost me around $2K

that is the only difference. i dont think it would be worth the extra money. you should instead use the money to buy a faster harddrive and/or more RAM.

Same here will the choice. I chose the S6210 due to the fact it was cheaper and paying additional 200bux wasn't really worth that Pentium M 1.7GHz with the 2MB cache. And besides the Pentium 1.6Ghz already gives you what you if you're going to just use it for school or even photo editing. For me I use it for school, some photo editing, and mainly downloading music and playing games. But definite like what Run1track and freeman said, upgrade the harddrive and memory. Its the best way to go and saves money [ :D]

Hey hey I finally figured out what I wanted to get for my laptop, and yea Im finally noticing the extreme slowness of that POS 40GB 4200RPM HD. So Im goin with the 5K80 instead.

the bottle neck in all systems these days is the hard drive. So I would go that route too, even before taking the memory beyond 512meg. When ps loads it's all hard drive and loading and saving files is all hard drive.

I have S7010 and went with the 1.7 (non dothan) thinking i could use all the power I could get comparted to my amd 3200+ desktop. For most applications the 1.7 plenty fast and I do not expect you will notice a difference in the 1.6 compared to the 1.7 dothan.

    Greetings,

I'm on the verge of buying one of these shiny little laptops -- thanks for the informative posts.

I noticed something about external screen resolution supported by the 6220 that i didn't see on the 6210 --

    Fujitsu LifeBook S-6220 notebook Internal max: 1024 x 768 resolution, 16M colors
    Fujitsu LifeBook S-6220 notebook External max: 1280 x 1024 resolution,16M colors

Anyone know if the 6210 supports 1280 x 1024 for an external monitor?

    Thanks,
    Rich

Can you hook up an external LCD to the 6210/6220 to do dual monitor support for programs like photoshop?

Is there enough screen resolution to suppoert say a 17 or 19" LCD?

    Thanks

    Following y'alls advice, i placed my order w/ P1 today [ :)]

This is actually a "switch" story -- sold my 17" G4 Powerbook and buying an s6220 768MB 7K60.

I had to get a PC laptop because i got a job working with a certain Major SOFTware company. After owning a Powerbook, though, i shuddered at the sight and feel of cheap plasticky PC laptops, but i spotted the s6210 at Fry's and it is a very nice little machine. The build quality and form factor pretty much sold me (sick of lugging a 7 lb laptop around) and this site was very helpful -- thank you all very much.

Now impatiently awaiting my machine... will be a long few weeks! I'll post impressions when i get it.

Is it better to select an upgrade on the 6210 for a 7k60 for $150? or just get the 5k40 that it comes with, and buy a 7k60 from pricegrabber for $150 and then have 2 HDs? does a hitachi 7k60 fit into the ultra bay? or does it require some small proprietary 7k60 drive?

The hard drive upgrade is nice, but if your budget is tight, it won't be a huge improvement over the 5400RPM. I would probably add more RAM before HDD spped anyway.

right, but if i were going to get the HD upgrade, would the better option be to select tha upgrade option for $150, and get the laptop shipped to me like that? or to get the laptop with the standard 5k40 HD and order a 7k60 separately to install? the second way i would get two hard drives, right? the 7k60 and the 5k40. i could swap out the slower one with the faster one, and use the slower one for external storage, right? is that what everyone does? and if not, why not?

because we can't be bothered? [:p]

But seriously -- for me it's mostly risk aversion. I know i could get what i want cheaper, but I'm willing to pay a (slight) premium to have P1 assemble, test and guarantee it. If they drop the new hard drive, spill coffee in the open laptop or break a pin off, it's their problem not mine.

    A matter of personal preference.

I'd pay for them to do it, because it takes time and is a hassle to reinstall everything. We're talking about a few dollars to save a few hours. To me it's worth it.

I rather do it myself since I know what I'm doing, just because I rather would choose my own parts and find it cheaper and paying extra for it. But of course, if you screw up, then its over for the laptop [ :D]

brian, you're saying it will cost a few dollars to save a few hours, and plus you have to reinstall everything. i would wipe out XP Home anyway and install XP Pro fresh. plus you would get the extra 5k40. so i don't understand why everybody doesn't so this?

Most people don't want to do it because they're either too lazy to, or maybe even don't want to hassle with reinstalling the software. Personally, I would rather do it myself and take it apart and reinstall what I want in it then having someone else do it for me.
