I know that Far Cry is an old game (about 4 years old to be exact) but I never played it. I played the demo a long time ago when my old computer with a GeForce FX 5200 could only play it on low settings lol. I can go to the store and pick it up for $10 or download it off of steam. Should I play it, are the graphics still good or decent compared to today's standards and is it a good game for a person who likes First Person Shooters such as myself?

Depends on what you played recently.
If that was Quake 4, Doom 3, Half Life 2, etc...Far Cry`s graphics will disappoint you.

I got it for the $10 reason a while ago, graphics are not "good" compared to todays standards... but they aren't bad. I never really was able to get into it. Just thought it was overrated.

Well when I upgraded my desktop like 3 years ago I played a lot of games. Such as Call of Duty 2 on max with 2x AA, 16x AF and Half Life 2 on max with 6x AA and 16x AF ... so I would be disappointed with Far Cry's graphics then? And what about like the A.I. and gameplay?

You know Bioshock is $15.00 on Steam right?
    Bioshock...Bioshock :) (although I didn't like it, I'm sure you would)

    I wouldn't buy farcry...lol

Why not try Crysis, medium? 1280*1024? The most recent Hitman, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter... I played an even more recent farcry for 360, and it was terrible (ai, gameplay); but I think that was because I was playing the Orange Box at the time...

Well, I beat the game on Xbox 360 and I wasn't going to buy the game unless I could run it on high on my laptop because my desktop can't run it. You think it would be ok on 1200 x 800, high and like 2x AA or something?

I don't think that game is really worth much of $$$ anymore. You might as well look into getting Bioshock for $15 from Steam. Better graphics and better storyline imo.

An excellent game I must say. Completed it six times with all maxed out on a Go 7600. Also it is quite longer than Crysis itself. Crysis SP is too short IMHO.

It is a very good FPS that you should play if you can afford $10. The graphics were amazing at the time and still hold up well. If you do happen to get the game, I would suggest you consider the HDR+AA patch found at guru3d.

    http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1293

It is a beta patch so there's no official support and you will have to overwrite some game files (easy). Also it can cause some odd glitches in the game, so save the original game files to restore them if you have to. For example, my only issue with the patch is that I have unlimited ammo. I've already played through Far Cry several times so I don't really care about that.

As for screenshots, here are a few links to decide if you like the look.

    http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/53973/

    http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/gaming/4543-far-cry-vista-x64-hdr-aa-pics.html

You can easily find non-HDR shots on the internet to compare. There is a big difference between them.

For anyone else, the patch only supports nvidia 8000 series and ati x1000 (preferably higher end ones).

I personally feel that, while its a decent shooter, it was a little overrated at the time. Also, the graphics arent that impressive now. If you are looking for somewhat older shooters I'd recommend games like half life 2 & FEAR over farcry any day

Bad graphics? what are you talking about? I remember I got it for free just over a year ago as a bonus with my RAM order from Crucial, patched it with the latest HDR patches (unofficial) and it looked awesome while giving me like 80 fps on my previous gaming laptop, as a matter of fact I thought I would prefer Farcry's graphics in Crysis coz it looked better than Crysis on low-med settings with double the FPS.

Highly doubtful. You may be able to run it at 1280x800, high... but AA will most likely kill the 8600m GT.

I have Half Life 2 and it might be my favorite game of all time. However, I did play the F.E.A.R demo and wasn't a big fan of it.

i could play it on high with my old Geforce 4 :D so i think the 8600GT Totally destroys my Geforce 4 aint that right ? XD

Thats true, if you are gonna play Crysis on Low, then get Farcry and DO the unofficial HDR patches, it will make your dreams come true trust me.

I knew someone was going to say that.

I was referring to his Bioshock question, not Farcry. Of course he could max Farcry out.

HDR is pwnage on a lot of games it just makes them look sweet. I've heard of HDR making Far Cry look a lot better than its first days.
