Look for a old G73JH... It will be more then enough for everything and you should be able to get it for $500...

Good luck on getting them to lower the price to that level...let alone sell it for less then 500$ used..... -
For $500 you are looking at a system with an IGP. An AMD A10 with IGP is pretty powerful for the price (usually). Your best bet is the Lenovo Z50 for $450. Won't manage newer games real great, but 2013 and earlier titles at low/medium details and less demanding newer ones should work fine. It's $450 on Amazon. Unless you can find a great bargain on a system with an 840m or 850m this is probably best you're going to do for under $500.
Amazon.com: Lenovo Z50 15.6-Inch Laptop (80EC000TUS) Black: Computers & Accessories
3DMark Fire Strike Graphics: 770
3DMark 11 GPU: 1184
3DMark Vantage P GPU: 3800
Otherwise you're looking at $600 or so for an 840m:

Cough Cough..
Asus G73JH 17 3" Notebook | eBay
It won't be in a perfect condition and this one needs a new battery which can be bought for $30-50 so hell it is possible if you look.. This is not the Best Buy model.. Looks like its a A1 to me.. -
If you can stand upping your budget to $700 the Y40 seems like a great cheap laptop that can do some low-mid grade gaming. But that's quite a percentage hike on the budget...
I think what others here said seems sound that buying a used one makes sense otherwise. -

I would try to put another ~$50 in the budget and then lurk these Acer laptops with a i5 4210U & GT 840m. I know I've seen one of these or similar hit ~$550 before.

I have that laptop bought it yesterday....its a champ

A 5870M will still bea tthe 840M and the 720QM will own that ty ULV processor...
-
I think it's a moot point since I believe mom already made her purchase and probably won't be checking this thread ever again.
-
"Mom?" Er wrong thread, WingNut.
-
I just love the fact that she will be know as The Mom among us from now on

Since I have that for a little while longer, ...yes ...and no.
Yes the 5870m is better, but the 840m will do pretty well at a native 1366x768.
As for the CPU, that quad only has 2HT cores at 2.4GHz and the ULV also has 2 cores through 2.4GHz.
But the single core passmark scores will tell why the ULV is better. The scores are 875 and 1472. Guess which one has which. And guess which has the higher overall score. -
Benchmarks are not equal to real life game experience.. The ULV will overheat in games like BF4 trying to hold 2.4GHz while the 720qm won't break a sweat at those clocks.. Also you can overclock using FSB program on the G73JH so on the whole, you don't want to mess with the 720QM..

Regardless, he's not going to be scouring ebay and craigslist for a 5 year laptop with no warranty, so what is out now is the point of this thread.

You're right. That's what I get for trying to use a netbook as my primary laptop for the last week or so...

As long as Stick Of Truth and Half Life 2 run it's all fine

Actually what little down time I did have I played some Freelancer and Peggle... yes Peggle. I still retain my man card though...
I did find a Sparrow-ware version of Civ 2 that worked great though on the plane. -
Peggle is a great game
-
Yeah, just with the bright rainbow colors, flighty music, and pleasant tones, it feels like a girly game more than anything.
-

What's wrong with Peggle?
-
Rainbows, unicorns, and kids music....
-
BUT EXPLOSIONS OF GREATNESS! I don't think you could call it "girly" just because it doesn't have guns with chainsaws and bro-dudes having a moment now and then.
