'Call of Duty' Targets a Monthly Fee - WSJ.com
Well I was actually considering getting this after reviews and performance reviews came out, but now. Hell no.

Not surprised. At least BF3 isn't going monthly but the map packs for BF3 won't be free though...

Problem is this will probably be successful because of all the drones that won't be able to resist.

nah jk never liked fps so much, the best ever was wolfenstein, doom was too scary, I usually ''sith''ed my pants playing it, and the duke for the boobs! -
The game companies have discovered a virtual cash cow with online subscriptions and fees and are milking bessy for everything she's got.

Thus begins the demise of CoD.
-
Pretty sure the demise of CoD started with MW.
make everything brown or sepia
I'm expecting it'll intro at $6 a month, with a 12 month option that averages $4/5 a month, because nobody plays a CoD game for a year and they'll 'encourage' people to 'save money' with it. BF3 can't come fast enough. -
Trailer for you guys. Hurry before it gets taken down.

Ok well basically it looks like steam community but just for CoD.
What a gyp. -
You can still play online without their Elite service. That is just extra stuff added on. Of course their new subscription probably has stuff that Black Ops has, but will be omitted from future Call of Duty titles, like the expanded stats for example. Black Ops is probably the last COD for me. Still liked the original MW the best. It has been downhill since.
-
Babby's first FPS.
The worst thing is, this is most likely going to introduce a trend that a lot of other developers are going to follow - it's just going to turn into a vicious cycle where most will end up fighting for their right to play any game online. -
Was considering MW3, but not anymore; BF3 for me.
I see this mainly being exploited through persons under the age of 18; or have access to their parents credit card. But, once the parents catch onto how much of a rip off this is [pay $60 for a disc, and $5 a month to play it], I'm sure they'll tell little Johnny "if you want it, get a job".
It would actually be a good idea if you didn't have to pay the upfront $60 for the disc. It would be like "renting" the game for $5 a month. -
What a bloody joke.
They milk us each year for 1 billion dollars and now they want more??
I seriously hope every one just pirate the game and not buy it. They have lost all my respect.
edit:
Mr. Kotick said Call of Duty Elite, and the customer-service operation that will be needed to support it, wouldn't be possible if the service was free. "this is an enormous investment"?????? HAHAHAHAHA
Yes, customer service including dedicated servers (cough cough mw2) and a functional game (cough cough black ops).
I'll buy it if no other game was coming out.... with actually realistic combat...and helicopters and planes....hmmm.... -
Gotta love Activision.
Today they officially announced the Call of Duty Elite service. It is a subscription service (prices unannounced) which will provide players with additional services like stat tracking, special servers and lobbies, and other goodies that fans of the series will be extremely excited about.
Personally, I hope this is the final straw that breaks Activision and their crazy pricing models and sends a wake up call to their fans/consumers (who didn't seem to mind when games went from $50 to $60). I'm automatically "defriending" anyone in my Steam friends list who buys this game.
I'd call for a boycott, but I'm pretty sure people's wallets will give out first. How people will buy this game and skip BF3 is completely beyond me. -
Typical, really doesn't surprise me considering it is Activision. I will not buy any games from them ever again.
-
I hate CoD as much as the next guy, but I think defriending people for buying a game you don't like is a little ridiculous. Also, I think it's only fair to point out that you can still play the game online without paying for this service.

HAHAHA. MW3 is just destined for EPIC FAIL. BF3 will pick up the slack and show developers that a well developed game for the PC AND consoles can make them millions of dollars.
-
Activision just doesn't learn, heh?
I think they got this idea from the TF2 and Portal 2 store, but instead, acti gave us even more useless stuff. -
Meh I only play the single player for COD games, it's like an interactive movie (which I sometimes enjoy, coming from grindy games like Minecraft, D2, and many others).
If I wanna play multiplayer fps I'd play Counter-strike. -
Official: I won't be buying it.
-
-
-
Well at least BF3 is coming out.
Def won't be buying MW3. Probably wasn't going to buy it anyways, but this seals it. How much can they seriously milk this puppy before laying it to rest. -
FYI-- this service is totally optional and you do not need to purchase it. It's basically only for those die hard players that want "additional MW3 crap" which actually includes all downloadable map packs for free. And by free I mean that you pay for it.....

I will probably end up with MW3 after it goes on sale, got black ops that way for $45. Black Ops has a farily balanced weapons, a good community, and solid controls, that is all I ask for from a fps. Bad Company (the only Battlefield game I've played) had controls that were rubbish. Also BF is made by EA and I blackballed them in 2004 (only purchased 2 EA games since then and I was ashamed when I bought both of them). I'll support activision over EA any day, I still miss my NFL 2K!!!!!!! And yeah as mentioned before this is just for the hardcore people that want to share more videos, track more stats etc...
-
In other words: pay $60 and get a partial game and experience. More of the full game experience will be removed in order to entice fans into going for elite.
I think I'll buy BF3 and be treated like a valued customer and not a 2nd rate citizen for not being elite. Just like their paid DLC Map packs, this will serve to divide the community even further. -
I guess I'm spoiled. I remember playing Half-Life, TFC and Counter Strike. Every time a major "update" was released [included new weapons, new classes, new maps], it was free as to increase the popularity and community of the game.
How I miss those days...... -
-
Well I was going to bash this but after reading the link bstapley provided (+1), I think it sounds cool. It isn't removing features of the game it's adding support features for stat tracking, comparison and community features. Will I buy it, probably not. MW multiplayer sucks. But the campaigns are usually good and I will probably get the game. And I won't feel cheated if I can't view summaries of every MP match I've ever been in.
-
-
Of course this subscriptions is "optional", just like additonal maps, game modes, weapons, lower ping servers are all "optional". -
If you read the link that I provided a few posts ago, I think that it's saying that everything that you get in Black Ops, MW2 or any other call of duty game will still be available and included. If you want "extra" stuff you get to pay the subscription fee. I'm not saying that MW3 is the bomb or anything like that...I'm just trying to correct some misconceptions about the whole subscription based program. Basically rschauby's first post I feel is a little bit misleading probably due to misinformation (no offence rschauby). Just my two cents.
-
So they're basically charging for access to dedicated servers?
-
I do however agree with the lack of serious improvements in the CofD franchise overall. I think that people will continue to buy the game because if they can get enjoyment out of it (which people will just judging off of previous titles and their sales). For me, if I get over 15 hours of enjoyment out of any game, then it's worth my $60. Reasoning: $10 buys a 2 hour movie ticket...so if I can get at least 12-15 hours of enjoyment out of a game (or about $60 worth of enjoyment), it will be worth my $60 to purchase it. If games have more hours of enjoyment than that.....BONUS! Obviously, not everybody is the same but hey....that's me!
For example: I'm ashamed to admit this but I purchased Black Ops and have logged over 100 hours of multiplayer alone. So in my mind, Black ops is a very worth while purchase even though it may not be the best or highest rated game in the world. -
-
There aren't really enough details of Elite released yet for us to be kicking down Activision's door.
Sounds more like you want to vent over the lack of improvements to MW3 rather than the subscription service. Well you'll get no argument from me there. BF3 will blow MW3 out of the water this year. But MW3 will probably be the highest selling game of the year again because it's COD. -
I hope EA stays with us.
They can either join Activision and make a "monopoly" move and have us pay for extras. OR if EA can have BF3 include the same "extras" as MW3 and keep it free, they can market on that idea and maybe put MW under its thumb.
I'm rooting for BF this time around. -
Also, this will lead to one of two scenarios: either you are mocked for having the 'elite' access, or you need 'elite' access to be anything more than casual (hint: if you are above prestige rank 2 or 3 in black ops, you are crossing into non-casual territory). While dragging the gaming industry to somewhere where gamers really don't want to go. -
-
It's a longshot..... but not if CofD is carrying Activision. I'm not familiar with all the stats, but I know that Black Ops is the biggest earning entertainment product ever made. Activision may be losing money on other portions of their business and CofD makes up for it. Oh what am I doing? I feel like I'm defending MW3! AARG!!ha ha. Honestly I don't give a crap what they do. I will not be purchasing the so called Elite package anyway!
-
Given Activision's record, I find it highly unlikely that they are only attempting to sell Facebook integration and stat tracking for $8 a month. Everyone knows that the service would flop if that's all it offered. If they are serious about this service being successful it will need to provide $8 a month worth of exclusive content. The exclusive content required to justify the subscription means there is no way the unsubscribed aren't getting the shaft.
-
I don't see why everyone is making such a big deal about this...all the key features of COD Elite are free. After reading through all the features, its mostly likely the fees will be for the prize competitions and the dynamic strategy guide.

As there were two different threads on essentially the same issue, I've merged them together in the hopes of generating a more linear discussion.

You just know eventually Activision will let paying subscribers have certain advantages like extra clips and gun unlocks vs. the rest of the players thereby making the playing field unfair.
-
Yeah screw COD. (Except COD4) -
If MW3 is MW2 with slightly tweaked graphics, a new 8+ hour campaign, new maps, new guns, new killstreaks, and new co-op modes. I'm buying it. MW2 was so fun...
$7.99/mo for shooting guns!
