Now for benchmarks - I will release one periodically, depending on several factors. I hope you guys will be thankful. (It wasn't easy to get hold of 20+ pictures BTW)
What I want to see.
1. Interest - People replying
2. Feelings - Tell us what you feel about the performance.
3. Analysis - Give us some comparisons and accompanying commentary.
When I feel enough discussion has been made about the specific benchmark, the next will be released. I reserve the right to take some outstanding analysis and post as commentary for the OP. (Don't worry, I will credit you for that.)
Now for the bench!
Benchmark 1 - 3DMark06
for Acer Aspire V3
Intel Core i7-3612QM 35W 2.10GHz
NVIDIA Geforce GT 640M 2GB DDR3
Default settings at 1280x768 - The screen is only 1366x768 BTW

Okay, now another picture of 3DMark06 programme information:

3DMark06 does not even recognise Kepler chips, so anything online with 3DMark mentioning a new name is fake for sure.

Now for Benchmark 2 - Fritz Chess Benchmark 11
for Acer Aspire V3
Intel Core i7-3612QM 35W 2.10GHz
NVIDIA Geforce GT 640M 2GB DDR3
Also, try guessing what the NVIDIA Geforce GT 640M with the Intel Core i7-3612QM scores in 3DMark11. 3DMark11 benchmark will be released when someone guesses the correct score (Performance mode). -
Now for Benchmark 3 - 3DMark11
for Acer Aspire V3
Intel Core i7-3612QM 35W 2.10GHz
NVIDIA Geforce GT 640M 2GB DDR3
Score: P1898

What I feel is that finally GPU performance levels above GT 555M possible in Ultrabook form factor. That alone is a good reason to celebrate if you are looking for good graphics performance in 14" and below. -

Interesting! Judging from the 3dmark 06 score its a tad bit stronger than the 555m, which gets scores between 9500 to 12k maximum..
Will be very interesting to see at which level the 650m operates, it could be nearly as strong as the 560m Did you find the acer 17 inch with the 650m actually?
Now did you run 3dmark 11 too though? Since 3dmark 06 only reflects the directx 9 capabilities
Oh and thanks alot
Very good that you included the temperatures too! The acer gets pretty hot indeed, now imagine running Furmark and prime 95 at the same time and then checking the temperatures, I could bet that it reaches atleast 90 degrees and maybe even throttles -

Can you pls post the full 3dmark06 result, perhaps a link to it? I'd like to see how well your 35W IVB i7-quad performs reflected by the CPU score.
If you have a Series-6 Sandy Bridge system handy, would you be willing to swap in the CPU and tell us if it works? -

And the best thing? It's available for purchase

Alright seems like the 640m is really on the 555m level, which is impressive!! OMG
Now the leaked 650m from the samsung q470 do actually match up look at this
And now benchmark results from the DELL XPS 17 thread !
-
That's pretty beast. I think 3DMark11, however, will be a better indicator of performance. Also, being 28nm, maybe it will overclock well.

For your info:
In case you want the GT 640M now, the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 is now for sale.

Based on the DX9 performance, Kepler seems way better than Fermi. And with the turbo system that makes the GPU operate very cool when not needed, it may be a winner.
But I will await the Vantage score before making a conclusion.
Awesome work yknyong. Nice to have people like you doing this for us.
Maybe if you still planning on going to the fair, maybe you can install one of the newer games and running the benchmarks they have. -
-
So before praising this new technique, lets see how it proves in reality.. As you can see the Ivy Bridge cores are already arount 82 to 85 degrees, who knows how hot it gets at full load with prime 95/furmark and if it would throttle.. It will be interesting to find out if the turbo boost helps to keep the throttling away or have an even worse effect for it (since CPU + GPU both turbo boost in intensive games for example) -
It looks like it's a decent discrete GPU but how can the DDR3+128bits combo not drastically nerf its potential ? The 555M-128bits was already severely hampered by its low bandwidth compared to the 192bits version.
Therefore due to dubious tradeoffs it ends up being just "good" while it would have been great with a wider bus or faster RAM I think.
I thought by now nvidia would have realized that 128bits buses and DDR3 were ok for chips that were barely half as fast and would have found a good compromise. -
Especially GDDR5 RAM yes.. But its anyways a good improvement, I mean the 640m is about 50% faster than the 540m, and reaches therefore 555m Level. The 650m is about 10% to 15% faster than the 555m if you compare GPU scores of 3dmark 06.. So thats pretty impressive, for a midrange or mainstream GPU! Im actually astonished that its so much faster and kepler
Remember, this will be the new standard after the 540m, so there will be a bunch of notebooks with these discrete GPUs.. Only very few laptops had the power of the 555m, now its basically the new standard.. Even some Ultrabooks (most of them atleast 14 inch) have this discrete GPU.. And the clevo 11.6 has the 650m for sure, so its damn powerful, could you imagine a 11.6 inch notebook half a year ago with a stronger card than the 555m (even stronger than the 192-bit 555m)? -
It`s kinda interesting to see the 555M as the low end for Keplers though -
Maybe Nvidia made their memory controller more efficient or something.
-
soo what type of performance is there to expect in 13-14in notebooks? I need to get a laptop for college so it has to be small but I would like to be able to play games decently well
-
From the benches, 555m level, which is quite respectable in a small notebook.

Remember these benchmarks are at 1280x768, not a very large resolution and less than the standard 1280x1024.
Memory bandwidth will kick in at higher resolutions. -
Here are some comparisons. Alienware M14x got the 192 bit with DDR3, Mythlogic got the 128 bit with DDR3. Neglible difference at 1366x768, around 6% average difference at 900p. But the difference between 128 and 192 bit starts to show there like you say.

The Quad 35w seems warm to me
-
Hmm I knew it - the benchmarks were taken at the Singapore IT show. Judging by the computer yknyong1 is talking about, I know where to find it also
But how did you get the benchmarks installed with so many Acer employees around?
-
Now show him whos the man in this forum too456. Go install a game and run the ingame benchmark and return back to this forum. And the IGP HD 4000 Vantage score is also highly needed. Perhaps they have a computer with GT 650M too?
-
-
Yeah, and big kudos to you again for doing this for us yknyong.
I think you two should meet and make up a team. One start asking all sorts of question to keep the Acer staff occupied, while the other one gather data.
The Acer have Optimus right? Would love to see some Vantage of that Ivy IGP. And Vantage of the GT card -

Now for Benchmark 2 - Fritz Chess Benchmark 11
for Acer Aspire V3

1700-1800?
-
Specific number dude. As long as someone gets it, I will release the bench.
Let the guessing begin! -
Refraining from posting anything further in this thread.. This is getting ridiculous..
-
3dmark11 1900?? thanks yknyong1!
-
Stop changing the numbers!
-
But seeing as how you went though all the trouble of getting the benchmarks I guess the least I can do is humor you. 1657? -
graz`zt's edited guess is very near
-
Too high or too low? 1912?
-
hint: P1xx8
I'm editing the pictures now for posting soon... -
1908. Definitely.
-
-
Which model of the V3 are you testing? The 14" or 15' one? Also, 1898..?
-
It's the 14.0" V3. P1898 it is. Uploading now.

Whats the graphics score in 3dmark11? Seems like a nice little GPU so far, a good bump in the 600m series.
I hope they don't end up with several silly 555m versions, and focus on specificl versions this time around.
