Hey ya'll I haven't posted in like six months but I've been hanging around still, I was wondering if anyone has encountered my self explanitory problem here. I recently acquired Age of Mythology from a friend, and it worked great for his laptop which is running a nVidia 6150m, but I'm running into a problem with it.

The start up movie plays but then when it comes time to actually utilze the game's engine for the main menu it says "Initialization Failed" and closes out. I was able to play the 1st time after installing it but no luck since.

Microsoft's help hasnt been much... well, help. I've googled the problem and there are a bunch of stupid remedies that haven't worked for me, and this is the place I know will get me the best answer.

I'm running it with the specs in my sig, the 8600M GT, let me know if anyone here can be my savior.

P.S. I've tried updating drivers multiple times from laptopvideo2go.com or w/e

Did you try lowering the resolution of the game?

That is odd that that would be a solution but it might work. All the threads reply the same way. Compatibility of the card, DX9/10 up to date, latest drivers. I'm assuming (and its obvious) that those conditions are met.

    Try this.

Start Age of Mythology in Safe mode, and then change the Screen Size setting in the game. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then point to All Programs.
    2. Point to Microsoft Games, point to Age of Mythology, point to Diagnostics, and then click Age of Mythology - Safe video.
    3. When the game starts, click Options on the startup menu.
    4. In the Screen Size list, click 640x480x16, and then click OK.
    5. On the startup menu, click Exit.
    6. Start the game as you do normally.

Edit: DOH! Well glad you got it. You posted as I was typing. :) What was the solution for future reference?

I reinstalled AOM a few days ago and had an identical issue. As I'm sure you discovered, and as The Forerunner pointed out, it seems to occur when the resolution is set to something that your laptop cannot display. In my case, I had set it above 1440x900 and fixed the problem by forcing widescreen resolutions in the shortcut.
