Could you guys comment on which one of these graphics cards is the best, and how good overall each one is?

    NVIDIA GTX 660M (2 GB)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 (1 GB)

    Thanks!

5870 is like 60% faster, but it's a desktop card and consumes a lot more power/puts out more heat.

    Thanks,

Yeah I had the Asus G73JH, which had the 5870 but was extremely prone to overheating...to the point where I needed a full-powered fan blowing at it to keep it on, lol

Looking to upgrade, and the Asus G75VW looked good, but it looks like there will be a drop in performance?

If so, any other good laptops that have similar specs to the G73, minus the overheating, in the same price range?

3dmark 11 show they have similar performance, R3d actually looked at the desktop card.

So you kind of getting little upgrade minus the heat, there suppose to be new GPU coming out on the ASUS G-series though.

Edit: but actually the 660 is suppose to be faster because it can be OC pretty good, but 3dmark site show stock

    I've owned both cards.

    660m is a bit faster.

Both have a rougly 20% overclock.

Look at these links. Go down to game benchmarks to get an idea of their performance.
    GTX 660m NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
ATI Mobility 5870: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 - Notebookcheck.net Tech

There's also a GTX 670m version of the ASUS G-series; which performs higher than the GTX 660m. However, there's speculation of a Kepler refresh of the GTX 670m soon, which will be called the GTX 670MX [probably will come with further performance increases]. Might be worth waiting a few weeks to see the release timeline for this new card.

    Good luck

Like I said before, there should be a refresh soon with the GTX 670 MX card.

    haha no problem

alex, any idea how soon 'soon' is?

Don't really want to rush into anything, but need a laptop for exams, and obviously carrying a full sized fan around to use the G73 isn't practical. lol

I never heard you need a beefy GPU to do exam though :). It shouldn't be that bad at idle? try clean out the fan/repaste maybe.

Even at idle it's awful now - lasts 5 minutes max :(

Already tried cleaning it out, and took it in for repair and they said faulty fans that would cost $200 to replace and probably won't last anyways.
