Vista, Cat7.2, and Oblivion with it updated to 1.2.
Every once in a while, I'll open a door...and the game crashes. It's rather annoying...does anyone know what to do?

I had that happen before, I tried many things, but it turned out a a fresh install of windows or a defrag is best BEFORE you install Oblivion.
I have tested this theory on many computers [newly (re)installed and currently being used ons], the majority of the results were the newly re-installed OS [full format, not quick] PCs got the best stability.
Installing Oblivion on the systems that have not re-installed (re-formatted) seemed to have about a 50% success rate for not crashing. -
describe the crash?
I get a black screen crash but when i alt tab and then go back the screen is normal again. -
-
Please tell us what, if any, mods you have installed. Also, have you done any editing to your oblivion.ini file?
-
Mine rarely crashes......mostly i have a problem with a part of a ms window flashing up for a few secs on the right side of the screen???
-
mine runs oblivion fine but it does the exact same thing in dark messiah. i defragged and it seems to have gone away for now but... u never know.
-
Maybe there's something to do with the new 1.2 beta patch. Since I installed it, it just randomly crashing once for a while especially when I try to fast travel
. Gotta make a reinstall tomorrow
-
As Said before, I had this problem with Windows XP and i just needed to reinstall (put your saved game files of a flash stick) And of coarse a nice defrag!
-
Try it in XP compatibility mode, that's all I can think of. It may be a GPU driver issue with Vista.
-
I've updated the drivers, I'm running in XP SP2 mode, and the mod list is basically all the official downloadable content plus natural weather and one of the leveling mods.
But I found this, can anyone confirm this has happened to them? Any chance this is why I'm crashing?
-
I had crashes that started yesterday resulting from some bound items, after they expire at random times the game would just crash. Sometimes when I went to save, sometimes when I was firing an arrow etc... I found the only solution was to go back to before the bound item expired and unbind it. There are a bunch of patches and things...and Shivering Isles really messes with things with its Reference Bug where you start losing all new objects on load after only a few hours of playing.
I don't have that problem though, outside of ALT+TAB freezes and the bound item bug...

I just got Oblivion for my notebook.
I also get random crashes. Out of nowhere the screen will turn black then I get an error message (I'll post the error message next time it happens).
It's really annoying since I've have had this happen 4 times in the last 2 hours. -
I think Oblivion has some memory leaks. My is stable for several hours, but eventually it will crash. When it does I see my memory usage at 100%. I have 2 gb of ram... I think that depending on how much ram you have, oblivion crash is just a matter of time. Since I usually don't play for 4 hours straight, it's not a problem for me. -

This is really getting annoying.
Okay I think the problems started AFTER I defragmented my hard drive.
I installed the game this morning. Played it and it never crashed (from what I remember). Later on I decided to clean up my computer (ran ad-aware, spybot and executive software diskeeper).
The game randomly crashes since then.
I uninstalled the game. Defragmented the hard drive. Installed and defragmented again. I never thought that defragmented might be the cause until just now. Could it be possible?
The speccs of my notebook are in my signature. I run Windows XP home edition. I have nothing else running when I play (I turn off NHC, AVG Anti-Virus and MSN before playing).
Edit: Nevermind on the defragmenting idea. I reinstalled it without defragmenting the hard drive and it still crashes.
This is really getting annoying. I can't even play the game.
This is really making me mad. Is there an issue with the X1600 and Oblivion? After each crash I have to restart since the drivers for my video card aren't working anymore (like if I was in safe mode). I have the latest ones from ATI's website. -
Okay, this isn't working. Even with Sidebar and other GUI related stuff turned off, Oblivion is still crashing. Perhaps it is the 1.2 patch I have, as I've never had this problem...
Once again considering re-loading XP... -
Oh it definitely has memory leaks. To test this, I turned of Virtual Memory in Vista so I ONLY had my 2GB of RAM to work with and no Page File on my HDD. After about 2 minutes of being outdoors, Oblivion slowed to a CRAWL at like 1 frame per second and was freaking out. Then I heard a Windows chime in the background and, sure enough, I was low on memory.
So, definitely don't turn off your Virtual Memory when playing Oblivion.
Also, to stay on topic, I've had Oblivion crash a few times similar to what is being discussed. Go through a door, black, crash.
I'm all patched up and a run a few mods but I Quicksave every 30 seconds or so, so I haven't really lost too much time. -
You know what's really strange...
I was hiding out at Frostcraig Spire after acquiring about 5k of bounty, and I decided to wait around a little bit...
Come out of wakeup, and suddenly I've got a conjurer fighting me at the top of the tower...now how and why did a conjurer suddenly decide to show up? My game also crashed while I was fighting him, so I'm not too sure how that would have panned out. I should have shoved him over the edge...but why was he there??? -
Game still crashes...
-
Sorry still no idea about the problem though. I don't game in Vista -
For those having problems with Oblivion:
First try fixes mentioned in the official Oblivion technical faqs. Then try unofficial technical faqs provided by the community. If you still have problems then search manually or try the search function in the official Oblivion Hardware and Software Issues forums for your specific problem. If you still can't find solution to your problem, which is very rare, then post your own topic in the forum and wait for answer... Case closed..? -
I just formatted my notebook and did a defrag before installing the game.
I still got some random crashes when I was playing yesterday.
This is really getting annoying.
I'll look around for a solution to my problem. Thanks for the links, ronkotus. Hopefully I can find an answer. -
Since I'm not using Shivering Isles, I'm going to back track to the last version of Oblivion before 1.2.
-
UPDATE:
Since this has all started, I decided to reinstall XP. It is even worse there...
Play game
Game freezes
Desktop appears
A small window 'Oblivion Active Movie" shows up
Try bringing up Oblivion again
Game crashes for good...
Or, the game just crashes... -
I just noticed a new patch for Oblivion, but it seems to be oriented to the shivering isles problem. Might as well try it though if you haven't I guess.
-
I installed SI and that patch as soon as I heard about the official release. No, I didn't use the beta drivers.
-
Alright, so here's the deal...
It still crashes...but I've notices a few things.
1) I installed it with the CD in the E: drive. I have two drives, E and F.
2) If I put the drive in F (E is having issues right now), Oblivion says no disk and to please insert into E.
3) Hit anything twice, and the game launches anyway...
4) Game crashes a few minutes later...
Alternatively, if I do put the disc into E...
1) Game works...
2) Game crashes, though it does take a little longer...
Also, for both cases...
1) Oblivion frequently losses focus from Windows, and Oblivion ActiveMovie constantly pops up. Unless I handle this right, the game will always crash immediately after. If I don't do it, the OAM pops up later and then crashes. Bottom line, OAM shows up, I crash soon after...
2) Game will sometimes freeze...I can rotate and look around, but everything else is paused. Yes, I'm watching snow flakes stay in mid-air here, and my flameballs paused in mid-flight.
I just reinstalled Oblivion, minus the SI and 1.2 patch, and this is still happening...WHY??? -
UPDATE: It appears that Oblivion and Roxio CinePlayer do not play well together. I'm testing that theory right now, but I think I've found the source of my crashes.
EDIT: Yup, that was the source. Been running for almost two weeks without a problem. -
