Just wanted to share this with you incase you didn't know already. This has caused a couple of people to have to buy new graphic's cards due to their old ones getting fried.
Leaving many games at the login menu or character selection screen causes my FPS to shoot up to 500-1500 at these screens. Consequently, my GPU starts to reach dangerous temperatures (100C+). This does not happen in game, just at the menu screens.
So, be careful not to leave your computer on at menu screens with uncapped FPS limits. I've forgotten a couple of times and got quite scared when I returned to my computer and found my GPU sitting at 100C.

Hmm i'l test it, but alot of the times high frames run off the 2d clocks or are capped to about 100-200 fps.

260M
And most of my games have a cap on menu screen FPS, but a couple of MMOs and some FPS don't. -
260m? Maybe you've got an Asus G series? In which case, 100C is nothing unusual (a little on the low side, even)

Ha yeah, the Dawn of War II menu screen is especially annoying. Now I just minimise the game when I'm away.

Just for kicks, I left the Dawn of War 2 menu open for a while (since that's what jenesuis mentioned, and since I've got it installed). Never broke 60 on GPU.

that's why there's VSync (removing screen tearing is secondary
)
a few people got their cards fried while playing eve-online by idling at a station with high fps -
thx for the heads up

I think there is an overall misunderstanding. That some loading screens are 'uncapped' doesn't mean the GPU will overheat, just that it can be stressed to their maximum.
Stories of people frying cards on the menu screen is just lousy, to say the least. A more probable scenario is that those people overclocked their GPUs (past a safe limit) and then by leaving idle on the menu screen their GPUs got stressed to the maximum (now higher by overclocking) and thus effectively getting their cards fried. So, was the menu screen responsible for the fry? No way, it was the user fault regarding the safety of their GPUs. -

This is what V-Sync is for. Your gpu never works harder than it has to.
Even if it is maxing out at 2000fps its not supposed to kill it if the card is properly cooled. -
Yup, I noticed HAWX does this. Whenever I'm on the menu (where vsync doesn't seem to apply), my GPU temp shoots up to the point it usually does under full load.

Yea, forgot to post that I forced Vsync on for everything earlier today.
No more stressful temps. -
