Is a Inspiron e1705 with an Intel 1.66 dual core, 1gb ram and Geforce Go 7800 enough for playing first person shooting games (e.g. Quake 4, FEAR, Doom 3)?
-
the 1.66 should be fine, it's the 1 gig ram you'll probably want to upgrade, especially for games like FEAR, apparently it stutters with even a gig, but the 1.66 dual core should let you play them at highest or near-highest settings.

I've been playing Quake 4 and Doom 3 on my E1705 duo core with a 1 strip 1 GB ram and Nvidia 7900GS with 256mb. Have not noticed any stuttering in either games. Though I will be getting an additional 1gb 667mhz ram from Newegg

Those specs look fine. Remember, when it comes to gaming these days it's the GPU that does all the heavy lifting. 1GB RAM should be fine too, although some games (BF1942, I'm looking at you) are real memory hogs.

I was wary about the 1.66mhz cpu but thanks to you guys I got that one clarified.

I would upgrade to at least the 1.83Ghz Core Duo.
But thats just me. -

I agree with USApatriot there. 1.83 Ghz Core Duo has the best price/performance ratio. The 2 GB is neccesary if you are a hardcore gamer. 1 GB should be fine too.

1.66GHz is fine. Thats about the equivilant of about 2.8 (little more or less) in P4 speed.

If anything, I would try and get the Go7900GS instead of the Go7800, which Dell underclocks and the performance is so-so. Use the Dell coupons.

Im going to have to dissagree with you on this one. My 2.2ghz turion and P4 3.2ht were pretty similar in performance, and after messing around with a 1.66ghz core duo its got a good margin of performance on the other two. Plus my work PC is a 2.8ghz P4 and its a dog in all categories... -
The 1.7 multiplier is only a rough multiplier and doesnt equate to all tasks done.
-
plus the 1.7 multiplier is left over from turion/athlon/p-m days. the core duo is faster and more efficient the p-m, hence why were all using it. thus the 1.7 multiplier is now too low. but is about to become point as the p4 is finally gettinga well deserved death
-
The 1.7 multiplier isnt that far off. Their performance is more similar than most people would think. My 1.86ghz still ties a 1.86ghz core duo in single threaded tasks.
-
I didnt mean to start anything I was just saying that my new 1.66 core duo blows my workstation 2.8 p4 out of the water. even in single threaded apps the p4 pales in comparison...even to my old averatec with the 1.6 turion before I put the 2.2 in. Thats all I meant by it nothing more and notheing less
