If you clean the vents and RMA it if you still have the issue, they will clean the vents and send it back...I had this happen. So I say, save yourself the time, RMA it and have them clean it up. Wait a week, and send it back for a legit fix.

I suppose thats the best way to go about it. I dont feel comfortable opening up a laptop (ive built desktops but this seems almost like a surgery). With the winter break coming up i should have enough time to send it over and have it checked out. My accidental warranty is still in place too :)
100 celsius is not normal right? I read somewhere that 8600m GT is allowed to go above that temp but it just seems wrong. And yes, i know that its potentially defective.

must be a defective 8600M if you flushed out the vents and fans with compressed air.

maybe it might require to be re-seated with a re-application of thermal compound.

There's no problems with the 8600M, not everyone gets the heat issues. Just buy it.

    Pfft, right .

Should i collect some sort of evidence to present Asus with or will they just take my word for it?

Present it, be firm, tell them you used hardware monitors (presumably HWmonitor) and they should freak out and/or take your word for it.

they should just take your word for it.

Nvidia already admitted to many defective 8400M and 8600M batches.

So they should already know that and give you a replacement... hopefully non-defective.

Although the G1S owners have mainly high temps due to the under par thermal design.

Thank you very much for the advice. I will contact Asus support middle of next week after my finals and update you on whats going on :) Im sure many would be interested in how Asus handles this RMA.

I had the luck of presenting my case to Asus before nvidia came out and said there were defective gpus to the public. Had all my screenshots and such in order, even included them when I sent it in. The support was helpful in the aspect that I got it RMA'd, I just felt they could have been...better. Truthfully, I like Dell support because at a certain point of the phone call, I can explain to a sup what is going on and get it taken care of. My experience :p

Been wondering about the heat on my 1520, it says like 150-160(f not c) when gaming, 120-130 when idle. That might just be the temp monitor I'm using but it still seems like it shouldn't be that hot?

I had to talk to ASUS support once and they were quite helpful, however I did not have to RMA.
That is about 65*C, so yes it is quite warm for an idle temperature. Even my HP dv5t, which has a hot-running 9600M-GT, only idles at 48*C unaided. Your 1520 should be running a lot cooler, it has a better cooling system than my dv5t. Blow out your vents with compressed air as detailed in the cooling guide, and as Gophn noted, reseat the graphics card with new thermal compound if that doesn't fix it.

Yeah I bought a can of compressed air to see if that would help, only managed to lower it like 2 degrees. Again, might just be the monitor I'm using though.
