Greetings. im in a bit of a situation here. ive never had a laptop before or even had the chance to use 1. at the end of may im going to be going away from home and moving from X to Y to Z pretty often so im looking into buying a laptop that will make counter strike 1.6 playable. im mainly concerned with what graphics card i should get since im clueless about how good laptop gfx cards are (i know of them, but dont know if for instance a 8400M is overkill, or will not be enough). also i play on a 19" CRT right now so im wondering which laptops have good LCD (low latency, 60-75hz refresh rate). the ones that look like they will definately do the job are the dell xps but no way can i justify paying $2500 + for that. if someone can show me the way to a cheaper laptop that will give me 100fps in 1.6 please do. thanks, appreciate it :)

edit: having constant 100 fps i mean like in a few smokes since fps drops are very harmful to my gameplay. also im looking for a 17" since that will be similar to other monitors i have been playing on, but if u know a nice 15" just say. battery life doesnt matter, i guess heating does though, i dont wanna burn myself by touching it.

    Hi.

you should be aiming for an 8600m GT with 256mb GDDR3 memory , not GDDR2 as it is slow.

    8400m GS low range card

    8600m GT medium range card

their are lots of laptops with the card i suggest avaliable, and it is only slightley more expensive than the 8400GS.

    regards

    John.

Be specific for which games u will be playing & we ll tell u.

For games like CS 1.6 .. even geforce go 6100 will give you 100 FPS easily.

But for new high-definition games like Call of Duty4 , Bioshock, Frontlines... you ll need 8600M GT.

So tell us which games u are planning to play?

That's strange, I played CS 1.6 yesterday, and the only way I could ever get 100fps was with OpenGL, but that dropped as well, strange as hell as I've gotten a GeForce 2 MX to run it at 100fps, so I'd like to know a solution to this as well.

type these commands in console one-by-one
    fps_max 101

    cl_updaterate 101

    rate 25000

Type these 3 commands & your game will run much better

And ya.. DISABLE vSync from nVidia control panel.

um, any current dedicated gpu can probably run CS 1.6 at 100 fps. the game is old. a single 7950gtx is cheap and very good at dx9. it's better than the 8000 series other than any 8800m card.

though perhaps one of you might be able to answer a problem i encounter in cs.

i have c2d t7200 and dual geforce go 7950gtx cards... when i play CS 1.6 for a scrim or something, my fps stays on a constant roller coaster, going from 100 down slowly to about 20, then slowly back up to 100. its about a 6-8 second ET for a full cycle. it's quite a weird problem to me, because it just goes up and down without stopping. i have no clue what causes this, and it's a bit frustrating. i normally leave my notebook powered on, so if i play one night, then a few nights later i go to play, i have to restart my notebook to resolve the problem. do any of you know what causes this to happen?

Counter-Strike is more CPU-intensive than it is GPU-intensive. Even a laptop with integrated graphics will be able to run it at those speeds, given that is has a good processor.

Counter Strike is one of those game that support one graphic modes better than the others, in D3D it is much easier to dip into lower FPS while openGL mode gives constant high FPS. so try using OpenGL if your graphics card supports it (some older cards does not).

Btw, a 8400m GS can push out 100 FPS in CS fairly easily, so if portability is a major factor you can get a 14 inch then hook that up to an external monitor when you are not on the go to get teh 17in viewing space.

Yes, just understand thats a big, heavy laptop, and you don't need to spend that much to play CS 1.6

You can seriously buy a $400 notebook and play the game with 100FPS purely in software rendering. If all your going to be playing is CS 1.6 then you actually do NOT need a dedicated video card at all. Oh, and every notebook LCD that I know of runs a minimum of 60Hz and usually around 8ms, so the LCD should not be a problem no matter which you choose in terms of how fast it is.

Again, if you ask me, someone who only plays CS1.6 and doesn't want to play anything else can pick up literally ANY new notebook you find and be happy with it's performance.
