Hey Guys,
I own a GT 683DXR laptop with a NVIDIA GTX 570M GPU.
Lately it really starts to get hot, watching a video is 75-80, Starcraft II 80-85, Just now I had loaded up Mech Warriors and got an Windows kernel mode driver 306.97 crash error. I checked CPU ID and noticed that my GPU was at over 100 °C. I've also noticed that the temp rises considerably when its plugged in. But still I haven't overclocked anything on my laptop and I presume 100 °C is way way way too high and im worried about my laptop. I noticed on afterburner there is no option to alter the fan speed or anything so wondered if there was anything software side I could do to lower the temperatures![]()

I'm assuming your laptop is about a year and a half ish old? Have you ever cleaned out your vents?
-
Laptop is about a year old, the side vents? I do have a can of compressed air but haven't used it yet. From what I can see of the outside they still look dust free :/
-

Then you better take a look from the inside. Also it looks like a time to do a repaste for GPU and CPU (while you at it). -
Will that not void my warranty though :/
-
its recommended to clean out vents and fans every few months from the inside. dust could well be your main problem.
warranty. if a company doesnt let you take the base off to clean the vents and fans then they are a bunch of morons and dont deserve to be in business. -

Will do, but you can always go to a repair service or something and they can do it without voiding the warranty. -
what msi voids warranty if you take the bottom off. omg now ive heard it all.
-
wow I lol'd... didn't know that
-
They have a sticker, if tampered warranty voided, and you need to pierce that sticker to remove the screw, I guess I could just say if tell off haha
-

Tough. I guess it depends on laptop manufacturer where to put that sticker. Mine was on the vent, so I screwed around other parts of the laptop
.

Who's your reseller?
Contact them for further advice, they may be able to confirm if opening the laptop to access the internals will void your warranty or not. They may tell you it's ok. -

That's insane. Stuff like that makes me glad I went with Sager/Clevo. The first thing their techs recommend if you have high temps is a repaste.
-
Compressed air first in the fan vents. Then consider a repaste.
Otherwise 2 large free range eggs and a dollop of Ketchup. -
While it is sound advice, I'm surprised they neglected to mention: 'check the laptop internals for DUST, and CLEAN IT if you find any'.
-
ive seen quite a lot of people recommend msi over clevo for gaming rigs on the what should i buy thread but this puts a nail in the coffin for msi if this is a strict rule.
must admit i was told exactly the same thing with my original m15x from alienware.
i was on the phone with faults every day for the 19 days i owned it and the first thing they said was to remove the cmo battery for one problem. so i asked about their warranty policy and they said oh yes it will void your warranty if you take the base off but could you remove the cmos battery before we try something else.
thank god this great forum pointed me in the direction of clevo after that. -
If possible, please download HWMonitor Pro (free 30 day trial), go through the top menu and select the log function. It will create a graph that show the temperature for you over the entire session. It will give us a much better view on how hot the GPU really is. Here is my 680M with Skyrim (its MSI btw). Its something I recommend to everyone who repaste their notebook too.
You can see the drops where the fan speeds up a little, other than that its running at the lowest fan speed with a quiet WHOOSH sound. Love my MSI
-
Or you can just get HWInfo64 for free and log the temps.
But yeah, first blow out the fan. There's likely dust buildup could be hindering cooling performance even if it's not visible from the outside. Too bad there is a warranty void otherwise I'd say to repaste anyhow. The factory goop is usually low quality and can dry out over time, and if it's a year old used a decent amount I wouldn't doubt it. I'm assuming you have a 2 year warranty? I guess if you don't want to risk losing warranty then call MSI and see what they say or have it sent in. And rubbing alcohol does wonders to remove any hint of sticker residue.

lol you're right, it's not the first thing they would recommend, just one of the first. When I called them about a crashing issue I was having, they asked me about temperatures and if I had cleaned the internals and repasted. -
Alienware does not void your warranty for opening the notebook. They have one of the most liberal policies in the industry with regards to that sort of thing. You can basically repaste and replace nearly every part in the computer without voiding the warranty--they just don't warranty the new parts you add unless its purchased from them (obviously). -
Same goes for Sager.
-
30 day free trial with HWMonitor PRO
Never tried HWInfo though -
HWInfo will require you to map results yourself, but it's 100% freeware, and easy to do if you have Excel or any spreadsheet program.

Hence why I don't deal with MSI directly. Go through a reseller like GentechPC. -
I visited an MSi booth just last week and they said that removing the bottom cover is ok lol
Apparently that sticker is just to record user damage, it doesn't completely remove the supplied warranty policy -
failwheeldrive Notebook Deity
Wouldn't that allow them to put the blame for faulty hardware on the consumer if they choose to take the bottom cover off? Sounds scary. -
Are you serious... I am (WAS) close to getting an MSI laptop.
Now I'm thinking just get a clevo. Repasting is so easy on Clevo machines. -
*checks list of prospective new gaming laptops*
*removes MSI from list* -
Yeah, stickers are a bit unclear. On a Lenovo I have it has a sticker that just says "Lenovo" on it over one of the screws. Nothing about "Warranty Void if Removed" or anything like that. So how am I to know what it means? I remove the sticker and clean it up thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and it's like it was never there. What are they going to do? I can say it was never there to begin with. *ANY* laptop that doesn't let you open up the bottom and at least replace RAM and hard drive and have access to clean the system fan is not worth buying, period IMHO. Then again, a lot of times you never know for certain what you can/can't do until you buy it.

Of the three MSI laptops that I've owned (GX660R, GE60, 16F3), I've never run into any kind of sticker.
All three were bought from GenTech though, so maybe ones bought from Amazon or Bestbuy or whatever have those stickers.
Hmm. All the more reason to buy from a reseller I guess. -
Lemme give you a list
-Acer (ram/hdd/fan)
-ASUS (fan)
-Lenovo (fan)
-Toshiba (ram/hdd/fan)
-Fujitsu (ram/hdd/fan) -
My GT70 didn`t come with a sticker either
-
maybe not now as they are owned by dell but back in 2008 that is what i was told so i asked for an email saying that and also an email telling me to remove the base to get to the cmos so i have it in black and white from their tech guys in ireland and porta rico. nuff said.

And this is a list of items you are not allowed to change without voiding your warranty?
John.
-
Not allowed to change.
All upgrade must be installed by the tech person/customer hardware support.
Also, I just remembered that new asus laptops doesn't come with a removable KB. The sticker is usually under there, idk about the new models. Might not be there, but I can't guarantee that. -
Who the hell change the notebook fan?
-
The ones who break it by having their cat sleeping on their machine
-
Are you sure that's ALL models of those brands? Also, by fan, usually if you remove the back cover you have access to the fan to blow compressed air into it, so not sure what you mean by fan? I have an asus Eee 1215N and no sticker but only RAM is accessible under the bottom cover, hard drive is under the keyboard. No stickers that I recall either swapping out the HDD, just a pain in the butt to get to it. By doing so, I had clear access to the fan I had an older Lenovo (been a few years though) that didn't have any restrictions, and had clear access to ram, hdd, and the fan. Maybe newer models, or is it just ideapads and not thinkpads? Toshiba and Fujitsu I have no idea. last Toshiba I had was the old 10" one with switchable graphics, about 6 years ago or so.
-
LOL, can`t blame the cat though. After all, a notebook is a warm place

Shouldn't have left Far Cry 3 running while you were away. -

Am i seeing things or has that notebook got two lan/network sockets, or is it an modem socket?
John.

Left looks like an RJ45 ethernet. One on right looks like a phone jack.
-

Wait, may violate the warranty? So it also may not.
-
Yeah I was just going to say the word "may" is quite ambiguous. It either will or it will not. Otherwise they should provide the circumstances where it will or won't.
-
Plenty of people who had the fan either fail or start making noises after few years. As for Lenovo, you can find a list of CRU (Customer Replaceable Units) on their website, e.g. System service parts and Recovery DVD part numbers - ThinkPad X230 Tablet, X230i Tablet .
-
But either you are in the warranty period and get it fixed at a service station or you are not where you won`t be bothered by the warranty rules since you are no longer have one valid anyway?
