I'm looking at buying a laptop from HIDevolution, and can't decide between spending the extra $400 for the 1080 instead of the 1070 card.

The main thing I'm concerned about isn't so much power right now - but more in terms of longevity for the future... is the gap between the cards significant enough to make one more usable in say 3-5 years than the other, with the titles that'll be out then?

It depends on what resolution you'll be using. For 1080p, a GTX 1070 will be more than adequate for years. For 1440p or higher, a GTX 1080 will be a wiser investment in the long term.

Both are really old nowadays and if you can wait for new gen GPU from nvidia it'll be worth it!

Oh well! Get the GTX 1080 with Vapor chamber so that you can Overclock in future. Are getting a Clevo or MSI barebone?

Yeah looking at Clevo custom built via HIDevolution. Also not sure about 15" or 17"... intuitively I'd think if I'm almost always using it plugged into a monitor, 15" is more power for the money but they seem to be around the same price...

Get the 17" for cooling power since you're connected to AC all the time. Invest in some good keyboard and mouse combo like steelseries, logitech etc. And a stand will help too. @Donald@HIDevolution can help you with that.

Thanks - didn't realize the larger one is better cooling, good tip!

Got the keyboard/mouse sorted from my current setup :)

Though this is for work... for play I may need a traditional mouse ;) (haven't been gaming in a really long time... looking forward to getting back into it!)

Lol, I bet we don't see new laptop GPUs until well into 2019. 1080 will last a long while yet.
