My processor: AMD Turion 64 X2 1.8 Ghz (Dual Core)
    GPU: Geforce go 6100 Integrated

    Symptoms:
i noticed my CZ (counter-strike) Dedicated LAN Server lags after equal intervals of time when i am MYSELF playing ..then when i exit lag goes away on its own... Framerate of CZ also drops to 15 ...normally it is 60-80

    Problem:
    1. The lag is caused due to Processor speed becoming 800 Mhz ...(Speed measured using AMDclock)
    2. GPU temperature goes above 100 degree to 110 also until i close the Game ...HL Dedicated Server runs for 4-5 hrs. (GPU temperature measured using NV monitor

My Question to Members: Can someone tell why my processor speed UnderClocks to 800 MHz even when comp is on High
    performance mode??

If it underclocks due to overheated GPU then how to keep GPU temperatures low on laptops??

I use Laptop...i opened up the GPU/RAM cover & have Removed battery also (running on AC only)..

Running Comp Elevated from ground (to allow heat escape) n RAM cover is open to allow all Central Heat to escape

    Any suggestions?

That temperature is crazy...100c is when things starts burning, im surprised your laptop is not spitting out fire...its probably a faulty monitor. Try another program and see if there is a difference.

Give Rivatuner a try and let us know what it reads. These programs try the best to read the temperatures as accurately as possible.

A notebook cooler is a great investment. My advice, find where the GPU and CPU are located on you're machine. Then fine a cooler that has fans as close as possible to those 2 components - that way you got direct cooling :D

I recommend the Zalam NC1000 - works wonders on my 1520.. My CPU sits at 30-40 degrees with the cooling pad, sometimes less. :D

It is not impossible. In fact if the computer is throttling then the reading is most likely correct.

    Its not impossble..u might be right...why ?

Coz the processor underclocks from 1800 to 800 Mhz ..and fans Run like Hair Drier...damn fast...

I ll give Zalman a try when i am back to singapore (right now in mumbai on vacations)...

Rivatuner ill give a try too ...

Thanks guys! ...you are damn fast like always!

    :D

Another thing to try, just temporary - turn off speed stepping, then play the game and see what happens. If it down clocks itself then, obviously something evil is at work.

NVmonitor reports the "core" temperature of the GPU. So the chassis of the laptop will obviously not reach 100 degrees celcius, otherwise it would burn his hands instantly. :D

Try reinstalling NVmonitor, but somehow I think the temp readings are correct. Laptops are notorious for having ventilation problems.

Best advice: Check out this excellent guide by Chaz on how to cool down your laptop here.

don't turn off speedstep, it makes the CPU run at a lower speed. i turned it off once and was getting around 20-30 fps less then what i got before in games.

100c is when water starts to boil :O and 110c???!!!
you can't really get help from the computer itself as the hp (compaq) locks major computer settings.

lol, disabling speed stepping should make the CPU run at full speed all the time. Not run slower....

Your computer is full of dust and lint!

Get a can of compressed air and blow the dust and lint out of the fans and air vents!

    AHHHHHHHH!

If it is not dust and lint then either your thermal paste sucks or your laptop is faulty.

CLEAN THE DUST OUT DANG IT!!

    *I'm ok*

Sellick...my Processor automatically underclocks to 800 MHz even on High Performance mode ...why is it underclocking/speedstepping itself?

    This is my main concern

lol 100c? thats way too hot im surprise ur laptop is not burning as at that heat things start to melt which leads to short circuiting and or serious hardware damage..

yeah if its dust thats a serious hazzard you need to clean the dust out ASAP

Try another temperature reader and get a cooler, i hope u dont have that sitting on ur lap at those temps?

When a cpu throttles down its usually beacuse of heat related problems. This means if the laptop is not being ventilated properly due to faulty fan(s) or just plan andd crap ventilation system..

Because it does not need to go higher. CS:S doesn't put stress on a 2007 CPU, even if it's not high end.

100C isn't going to damage the computer. Nvidia's teshold is 110C. My 8600runs either at 94,96 or 105C while playing (depending on its mood) but on a 6100? that's ****ed up

Yeah you need to get a can of compressed air and blow out your fans (with the laptop off of course :p). Check out the cooling guide for more tips. You could also try undervolting your CPU but I think your vents are blocked from dust/lint.

Yes you can get compressed air pretty much anywhere. A drugstore probably stocks some at a really high price. Electronics shops should really have some.

It sounds like heating is your number 1 problem, speedstepping is far less likely, especially if the problem is recent. If you turn of the processors ability to downclock when it overheats, you are going to be royally screwed as it initiates fusion.

I doubt that it's choked, it's possible but common, no way, that's why I didn't mention it. My laptops is 4 - 6 months old and I have a wood burning stove in my house. And it's NEVER dusty.

How can his be that bad? Likely a faulty issue.

To turn off speed stepping, go into you're BIOS it'll be an option.

Do you have pets or something? What is plugging up the vent? Hair or a lot of dust? And yes it is possible to get your vents filled with dust and hair, it just depends where you use your laptop.

Applying Arctic Silver 5 will just void your laptops warranty, don't do it. When I did that with my old Compaq I only saw a temperature drop of 5C. Not really worth it and it sounds like your laptop's problem is something different.

Don't turn off speed stepping until you can make sure you laptop will not overheat again. Turning off speed stepping will just make it worse.

Try the vent cleaning first. Open the case if you can (without voiding your warranty and blow out any dust that you see. Take pictures if you can too.

It's undeclocking because you probably set the power options wrong or it was like that default. Go where the icon for AC is or where the battery icon is , when on battery, and left click and set it to always on. That should stop the CPU frequency change.

About the temps, check the laptop by touching it. Does it seem that hot? also, get Riva Tuner , install it, and if that doesn`t work post again and we`ll help you.
If it 2-3 months old,you should also send an email to HP, but NOT BEFORE checking for dust in the vents.
Do you hold the laptop on a solid surface or on something soft? NEVER hold your laptop in your lap if you`re a boy, google it and see that it can cause impotence or sterility. NOT KIDDING :confuse:

And lastly, take out the battery and try running it a day without it, and see if the temps change.

I'll have to agree with the dust theory.

It is the most likely of everything else.

You are supposed to clean out any notebook (especially if its got a gaming GPU) once every month or two.

The dust will collect and the heat will make it condensed... clogging up fans and vents.

    1) open up the panels to get to the fans and vents if possbile
    2) use a flashlight and try to see through the vents... if you barely see light through the other side... then its dust
    3) use some Q-Tips and compressed air cans (or compressor) and give your system a 15-30 minute cleaning.
    4) always monitor the temps, to watch for dangerous temps (90C and above).... and indicates that there is a cooling issue (DUST)

Optional: re-apply thermal compound for the CPU and GPU if needed.

Lastly, use your notebook on clean, hard, flat surfaces (NOT on laps, beds, couches, etc)... but I recommend (for gaming notebooks) to use a good notebook cooler (like Zalman ZM-NC1000) to cool the entire underside of the notebook.
