The X300 will really struggle with those games. . . even at lower settings. I'd strongly suggest a faster card if you plan to play high end games such as those.

How much do you plan to spend? If you would like a notebook recomendation, just complete our FAQ in the hardware section, and post a new thread. People will chime in. ;)

From what you are looking at, I'd take a guess that you'd like to spend around ~$1,300 or so. Check out the Compaq V4000t with the 128MB X700, that's about 3-3.5 times as powerful as the X300.

    Cheers

You could pay $1100 for a dv4000 with the same x700

Pentium 4s run hot and the machines with them are heavy. You could wait for Dell to get the 6800 card back.

I can play DOOM3 with a 64MB 9600 at 1024x768 and medium quality pretty well. a 128MB X300 should be as good, if not better. Of course, X600/X700 would be a far better option.

i just got my 9300 with the x300 and 512 ram the other day. i planned to add another 512 but am not too sure whether i need it now. i played starwars battlefront2 on 1900 x 1200 res with no real lag. i played halo on 1200 something by 700 something with no lag.havnt tried a res above that.
it seems to work well with these games.

Any comments on the performance that most AMDs are stuck with...the ATI 200M?

If you want a 17" inch screen, then you'll probably want a Dell Inspiron 9300 with a nVidia Geforce 6800 Go. That will handle just about everything you can throw at it with decent settings.

bear in mind that u can play cod in directx 8 or directx 9. it should be able to play at directx 8 but the quality won't be as good as directx 9.

btw i think its always better to run games that your native resolution if not the picture would not look as good.

Do not keep cross posting the same post. Your others were deleted.

You will only be able to run at that resolution if you set the graphics options to DX7.

So what you're saying is that every game can be made to run nicely on a relatively weak card by removing the newest bells and whistles. That's nice. How can that be done?

In CoD 2, go into Options > Graphics > and change the rendering preference to DX7. You loose the special fx but it still looks nice, CoD has great textures.

Now, that can't be done to all games, but some, yes. HL2/CS:S is another.
