How come there are no good 13" gaming laptops? The closest I can find are m11x and sony z. One lacks well rounded performance, and the other is hardly good enough for gaming.

13"
Gaming
Laptop
Pick Two. Not Three.
Closest you're going to get is the M11x and Sony Z performance wise. -
I pick 13" and Gaming...
is that? -

then hook this up to your 17" gaming rig. -
Easy answer. Who really wants to game on a 13" screen? I mean, I know portability is the new thing, but if I am gaming, the bigger the screen, the better.
I don't mind lugging around my 17", just as long as I get a nice large screen. -
Agreed!
But for the OP the best setup would be the Acer Ferrari netbook which uses an external HD5870 which is more powerful than the HD5870 in the G73, Clevo or Sager.
Not sure about how CPU will affect your gaming though. Netbook CPUs aren't really meant to do anything more difficult than viewing a simple 720p video. -
Has anyone heard when ATI or Acer is releasing the XGP box for their Ferrari One netbook ??? Thanks for any info. God Bless

The XGP box uses a mobility HD5870, so is same potency as the G73/Clevo/Sager. Probably so they don't need you to lug around an ATX PSU to drive it.
Consider a DIY ViDock using a x2 link, desktop HD5850/HD5870 with 2GB VRAM, along with a 13" IGP unit with appropriate ports if you small with very fast graphics to an external LCD. -
How about a simple asus u30jc? It has the nvidia gt310m, its a weak gpu, but should be able to play games like cod4.
If you want a stronger gpu, how bout the 11 inch alienware m11x, it can play cod modern warfare 2, but it has a 1.3 core2duo (can be clocked to 1.73ghz).
edit: similar 13 inch laptops with the gt310m are the vostro 3300 and the sony vaio s series. -
Sony Vaio Z, that's one of the most powerful 13" laptops you'll see in a long time. It's extremely light too at 1.45kg.
13" 1920x1080
Core i7 620M
Nvidia GT 330M
1.45kg -
The most powerful would be TimelineX 3820TG.
Core i7 + Radeon 5650HD there are only equivalent laptops (or not) nothing more powerful.
Not to mention built is good and it is potentially the most value for money model around. -
Do you have any info regarding the heatmanagement? Acer is known for giving you a lot of hardware for a small price, while forgetting to install some decent cooling...
edit: IMO the vaio Z is also too hot... -
I heard that Acer 3820TG has 2 built in fans.
I believe if you clean up the heatsink it will be ok. -
Wow 2 fans in a 13 inch laptop? I hope the rumours you heard are correct, if they are i'm definitly going to get myself one of those acers with the ati hd 5650. No reason to even look at all the other 13" laptops then.
-
Truly a beast! Wonder why Acer doesn't have a 17" beast with hardware scaled up from the that 13"
-
Actually acer does have a pretty beasty laptop line, but the metal chasis is more complicated than the one the u30jc offers.
here's a link to a Belgian store (dutch language) which offers such a "beast" for 2500. Notice, it has 16 gigs of ram xD You got to love acer for overdoing it ^^

They have different sizes with that chassis design, though this is the only model i've found yet. -
While that is the most awesome thin and powerful 18" laptop I've seen.
I meant like a dual fan with HD5870 or triple fan with SLI GTX 285 -
I'm curious - which one of those 2 is lacking "well rounded performance" and which one is "hardly good enough for gaming"?
The only 2 problems I see with Sony Z are its high price and the fact that you can fry eggs on its GPU after running 3DMark06.
Also, to answer who wants to game on <=13.3" laptop... well I suppose pretty much anyone who bought m11x and devices such as PSP.
-
I know ViDock probably works well but I really don't want to have an external monitor to go along with it.
I need it for college far away from home, so I want to have little carrying as possible. Something light enough for class, and powerful enough to do light gaming. The game I am concerning about the most is SC2. 310M is not powerful enough to run it smoothly and 330M seems to struggle under med-low as well coming from my friend who has a Dell XPS with more powerful GPU.
Can you guys give me more info on the AcerTimelineX 3820TG? From what I read about it, the 13" version doesn't have 5650HD. What's the release date of this machine? -
well it runs super toasty... according to notebookcheck.net , on load and benchmarks , CPU ran in the 90s C and GPU was in 80s C... the acer might be ur best bet but depending on what screen comes with it , it might kill it for u..
-
Say what?? I wish it was 1920x1080..
Last time I checked it was 1600x900..
Aside from the fact that it's not the most powerful the thing that bothers me the most about the vaio is that sony forces me to get SSD drives, which can cost up to 1000$, which is about the price of the 3820, forces me to get wireless if I want the i7 core, forces me to get windows 7 pro if I want a clean install. What kind of marketing is this? No wonder it costs twice as much as the 3820....
As for the reason to getting a 13" gaming laptop- When I'm at home I want to be able play games, surf the web, watch movies and do school work, all of which I can do on my desk, or with it sitting on my lap, laying on my bed (untill the thing starts to heat up).
When I'm out and about, or at school, or at a lan party, or on a vacation I want my laptop to be mobile, light, small enough to fit in any bag, and not just those ugly laptop bags, I want to be able to work with it in class, on my lap or on the small side table on the chair.
All in all it fits all of my needs, both at home or outdoors.
Tell me you can do all that comfortably with a 15" laptop... -
The Z can be configured for
1920x1080 or 1600x900
It's usually the high end Z that has the 1080 display.
With the Sony Z, it's well worth the money...what can I say? I have one of the older ones, and it's still worth every penny! -
bump up an inch, to deal with the added weight and size of an inch and maybe a pound, hit the gym hard, perhaps in another year you will be able to bear the added burden of weight of that extra pound to carry around. Once you are physically capable, get this 14" coming down the pike. As a bonus, it comes one of the best laptop displays you can possibly get on a laptop, and decent graphics for its resolution, if not great.
YouTube - HP Envy 14
All your problems for options would be solved if you could only detach yourself from the necessity for a 13" notebook. Makes it hard to add in the parts you want. So choose. -
Not a bad option, but he will take a hit in the display quality aspect, but then he never mentioned caring about how good the display was, the thing everyone stares at almost every waking second of use of their laptop.
I think it is important, but maybe I am weird. In either case, if he did care, the envy 14 coming out will have a brighter and better display than the timeline. -
1080p on a 13" is pushing the sane range on resolution on such a tiny screen. 1600x900 is perfectly fine, and plenty of space for that size. If you really want more so be it, but remember, for GAMING, driving an even higher resolution on a more anemic gpu like the 330 will only make things worse performance wise. You can always drop the resolution of the game down, but then you would not be in the native resolution and apparently that lowers display clarity. But maybe I am off on the last point.
-
I definitely would not want to push 1920x1080 game pixels through a 330M.
And just to hit on the Acer Ferrari One, the XGP box with the Mob. HD5800 may not ever show up as Acer is reported to not be happy with it. -
What graphic card does Sony Z have ?
Is this Laptop more Powerful than the AW m11x ?
or Suggest another, dont like the Acer
Thanks -
It's got a discrete and an integrated card
--NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M GPU (1GB VRAM)
--Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator HM57
Alienware M11x has:
--NVIDIA GT335M GeForce®
GeForce GT 335M offers 72 shader cores (compared to the 48 of the GT 330M) -
I agree with this, you can always get an external monitor and hook it up if having a larger screen is a nessesity. Lugging around a 17 inch notebook compared to a 13 inch notebook is like comparing someone moving a large painting and someone with a handheld wallet photo.
-
yup makes no difference what so ever being in native resolution or not. Same thing, just losing what the larger resolution gives you more pixels making it a bit better picture or what not. There seems to be some disagreence on the dubject but from my experiences with gaming laptops there is no difference in my mind.

Thanks
I guess nobody beats the Wiz lol
