One of my friends is thinking about purchasing an hdx 16. My one concern about it however is the resolution. It native is described as 1366x768, but as far as I can see, games don't support this awkward resolution. It isn't even precisely 16:9. For example, team fortress 2 gives the option of 1360x768, but not 1366x768.
Will my friend, assuming he purchases this laptop, be able to play games at native resolution?

Yes, 1366x768 is still 16/9 I believe, almost every new game should run natively on that monitor. TF2 will show the option of 1366x768 if that is the native resolution of the monitor.

(1366/768)*9= 16.0078125
So the resolution is in fact 16.0078125:9, which is the problem. Sure most new games have support for 16:9, but his resolution is not precisely 16:9 -
It's going to then have a tiny, imperceivable stretch of 6 pixels when you play a game set to a 16:9 resolution.

Get the 1080p screen, text is very crisp and legible for me at least (you get used to it), and it's fantastic for pics/movies/games
I can play games in 1366x768 as well as 1280x720, 1600x900, 1920x1080 etc -

a 6 pixel stretch is not going to be visible by the human eye. at all.
of course, i would have the same mental block that you are having. why get something that isn't exactly right when there are "exactly right" products out there? -
Source engine games , HL2, CS:S, TF2, L4D etc.. all support every resolution that your monitor/video card supports. It should be right there listed in the 16/9 resolutions, but if it isn't, a simple change to the launch options will fix it, almost every other game has support for custom resolutions as well..
In Source engine games, it's "-h 768 -w 1366 -fullscreen" in the launch properties without quotes of course. -
Alright, thanks for the clarification guys. It turns out the reason tf2 wasn't giving me the option to switch to 1366x768 is because it isn't one of the default resolutions on my graphics card. I manually set my resolution to 1366x768 and the thing worked just fine.
Anothergeek, he would get 1080p on his laptop, but because he's ordering it from amazon, he can't customize it at all. It's a shame, but amazon is tax free and has a really nice deal at the moment.
Thanks for all your help guys. -
Or you could always set the option in the Nvidia Control Panel to not scale the image at all. I doubt you're going to notice 3 black rows of pixels on the top of your screen and 3 black rows of pixels below.
