I'm about to order either the compal hgl30 or the hel80 (or maybe the s96j) and even though i went to best buy to check out how 14 and 15.4in notebooks look in person, i couldn't play any games on them, so i was wondering if you guys would recommend. Is 14 inches of screen real estate enough to game comfortably? I'm leaning towards 14in for the portability as i would like to be able to take the notebook to class to take notes.

the hel 80 isnt that heavy at 7lbs and the power brick is very minimal, personally i would say the 15.4 is the better screen size not only because of the larger screen but the chance for more heat dispersion within the laptop with the amount of power thats inside that dispersion can be quite useful :)

I like my 14" screen and gaming at 1200x768 is good enough for me. I weighted the portability higher. I wanted a laptop that I could bring with me without having to lift weights as well as a laptop to game with at home :)

no difference in hardware for 14in and 15.4in, except the screen..

the 14in appears to be much more portable...and would be good for taking to class... my dell is clunky but i still love it :p

I have a 15.4" screen and gaming is fine. I cant imagine using a smaller screen. Only get the 14" if you *need* portability, othewise the 15" will give less eyestrain.

I've never gamed on a 14", but I really enjoy playing on a 15.4". This is my third 15.4" laptop, and I'm not sure I could game on anything smaller.

I firmly believe the extra 1.4" makes a nice difference.

And remember a 15.4' screen wil have ~20% more space than a 14' screen

    HchorionicGT,
I'm in the same situation you are in. I checked out the sizes in person myself as well and personally, I didn't think the 1.4" difference was too dramatic. I'm drawn towards the Hgl30 because of its portability, though portability is not a top priority for me(just a nice thing to have). But...I think I'll go take another closer look before I decide :p
